I became a level 4 in just a few days without prompting them. Maybe that was because I already had more than 100.000 edits when they introduced it...

Out of curiosity, where do we go to find the number of edits we've done? I've got a long way to go to make it to 100K but I'd find this motivating.

What is the definition of a "map edit"? Is it chomping roads, traffic updates, etc.?

No it's the stuff that map editors do in the background. For example, naming roads, making sure they connect up, sorting out junctions roundabouts etc.
