Freeway City Naming?

Post by Kobes1878
The city names on Freeways seem to be what cause a majority of city smudging throughout states. This is because Freeways tend to have long segments that travel through multiple towns. I believe this is a state-specific discussion and have noticed that many states have opted not to have a city label on them while others have agreed to keep the names. I would like to bring this back up in NJ as well.

Thoughts?

Or has a decision already been reached?

Pending the upcoming NJ raid, I would like to bring this topic back on the table. Yes even if it only effects the Parkway. ;)

Lets discuss...

Whenever I've handled roads, my general thought was to use segments split at city/township jurisdiction lines. Using I-295 and the Turnpike as examples in my area, it generally has been pretty clean and made for segments that are manageable for editing but still useful for traffic/incident calculations. It's probably best to keep it limited to segments named after the larger unit of an area.

(i.e. I-295 in Mercer County with the encompassing "Hamilton Twp" rather than the CDPs "Mercerville" and "Hamilton Square" where it weaves in and out of the two.)

This is still being determined. In the meantime, let's not change any names that don't have an urgent need to do so.

My concern is that it's simply not intuitive to leave out city names on a freeway just because it is a freeway. They should be cut at town boundaries just like any other road, to accommodate the city name on either side of the border.

What are some of the problems with the way it is now and what impact do those problems have on the overall Waze product? Are there more intuitive alternatives to address those problems?
