It's time to... MapRaid!!!

Postby MapSir » Wed Jul 15, 2015 2:19 pm

Hi All!

As I see there are several active editors here that are amazingly taking care of things,
It is a glorious opportunity to have a MapRaid in Saudi Arabia.

What is a MapRaid?
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/MapRaid

How to start the MapRaid?
https://docs.google.com/a/google.com/fo ... I/viewform

We have the stats and numbers for these following cities which are great to start with:
Riyadh
Jeddah
Khobar
Buraidah
Dammam
Khamis Mushait
Ta'if
Medina
Mecca

So, who's in!! :)

This is a fantastic idea!
But the problem is the locals are very few. I previously started a thread discussing to localize names to get users in Saudi Arabia to enjoy Waze more.
The main issue here is the lack of localization and I am already working hard with the Localization team to translate WME to bring more locals to the community of editors.

I suggest that we focus on Localizing whenever possible in this Raid. This will be a good opportunity to support Arabic faster!

Things that need to be in Arabic are city names, street names, places names and addresses. For features where Alternate names are supported I recommend using Arabic for the main name and English for the alternative name, except for the city part when adding alternative street names. I highly suggest city names remain only in Arabic no matter what.

As long as keeping localization in mind, I'm more than happy to be involved in this MapRaid :)

Sounds like a plan.

The Raiders can be concentrate on updating the streets names while updating the segments and adding missing ones.

What do you think about involving editors from neighboring countries too? it will be a good chance the work together - teach and learn.

This is a good idea :)

Nothing's better than having more wazeres to help.

If there is any need to know street names I can provide them in Ar Riyadh. I know this city very well.

Hi,

Thanks for the ideas.
Though there are active editors that doesn't understand much of local language, most of the City names, street signs in the Eastern Province are in English. The idea however, in having a dual language on street names and places is feasible.

Raid on! :D

The same is in Ar Riyadh and the surrounding areas. I'm working in changing them from English to Arabic and making the English name as an alternative to help non Arabic editors who are active in Saudi Arabia to identify the names easier. I think this is a better approach and will benefit the end user.

The only mistake that came in my mind when naming streets like this is that editors could change the city name box that is (grayed out by default) for the street. Adding the name in different languages would make two different cities in the maps when viewing the Cities layer. This is wrong and should not happen. I think for cities we should keep them only in Arabic at least for now. Maybe there is a future plan to include dual or multiple languages for names :)

Hi guys!

Great to see you like the idea :)
First of all let's set some ground rules for naming the cities and streets (that's up to you).
Then you can already sign up through the form I posted and we will do the rest.

I will post now a message in the UAE forum and see who's interested in helping!
