Shirley Roundabout - No 1st Exist

Post by joshbrw
On the following segment of roundabout there is a slip road that turns into Tesco/Notcutts Garden Centre, but once you pass the slip road you can't turn left.

Any ideas how to reflect this in the map?

Hi John,

Thanks for your comment. I think you've understood correct, in the fact that if you're coming from the A34 Stratford Road the first exit isn't an allowed turn, as the angle of the grass verge shows. This exit is a completely valid turn if you're coming from the other exit, or if you go around the roundabout.

For example, this wouldn't be allowed:

New routing arrangement looks good. I drive this way to/from work Mon-Fri so will give further feedback once it's live on the routing server, but I think Keep Left/Keep RIght works in this situation.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum where you'll find lots of people to help answer your questions.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking here. This is a roundabout with 3 exits.

Working around the roundabout in a clockwise direction:
Coming south-east along the A34, the first exit takes you into the Tesco, the second continues the A34 towards the M42 interchange and the 3rd exit takes you back north-east along the A34.
Coming out of Tesco, the 1st exit takes you on the A34 towards the M42 interchange, the 2nd exit takes you to the A34 going north-east, and the 3rd exit takes you back into Tesco

and so on.

The fact that it's a service road going into Tesco doesn't mean it counts less of an exit as the others. And, of course, the entry roads joining the roundabout don't count as exits.

Are you saying that, coming south-east down the A34, and as there's a separate entry to Tescos before you reach the roundabout, the counted 1st exit should be the A34 going towards the M42 interchange? There are ways of doing that, but they aren't really appropriate here because of the road layout.

And, of course, as soon as you pass the roundabout, you will get a Turn Left instruction if you're heading for Huskisson Way.

Have you read the section in the UK wiki about roundabouts? There's a link there to the US page which goes into detail about what sort of directions you'll get at a roundabout, as at some you'll get turn left, right or go straight on instructions. This is the sort of roundabout that gives numbered exits.

Hope that helps, but come back with more queries if you want further clarification or I've misunderstood your question.

Thanks for clarifying.

I've rebuilt the roundabout as ordinary roads, so normal junction instructions will be given. According to Streetview, the only prohibition for traffic coming east along the A34 is that they can't turn right at the lights. Although the road lane markings only show straight on, they don't prohibit a left turn into the Tesco so I've not prohibited that.

Drivers staying on the A34 will get a Keep Left instruction in both directions. Drivers coming from Tesco will get a Keep Left to continue on the A34 (E), or Keep Right to go round and west along the A34. It'll take a few days before we get an update that makes this live on the routing server, but what do you think to the new arrangement? Will it work on the ground? I don't know the junction and Streetview images can be outdated, so your view as a local is important.
