Shielding state highways

Post by Machete808
[EDITED POST]

It now appears that pairing both the common name and the route number in the primary naming field will allow the display of highway shields, so there's no need to choose one over another. I'm still interested in local feedback on how this would sound/look before we decide where to make the change on state highways. Waze may make this display feature active "soon."

BUT we may need to consider possible search impact in areas where the highway name is part of a lot of addresses. I think a search would then pull the Google result and route appropriately, and perhaps including the common name as an alt would resolve the search issue. Interested in any thoughts here.

The stretches of highway without many house numbers attached are relatively common on the neighbor islands, but even on Oahu, there are some. For starters, I don't think any location has a Kahekili Hwy address, though I could be wrong. Parts of Kalanianaole Hwy, on the Ka Iwi Coast side, though not so much the East Honolulu stretch where there are houses right on the highway.

For example, I don't see any HNs here:

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... 2,62649522

The proposed naming syntax in the primary field would be:

Named Hwy / SR-XX

I'll doublecheck with other sources for the question on the routing issue, too.

On Maui, nobody ever refers to the highways by number, and the shield signs are much less prominent than the actual name of the route.

To change a primary name to be SR- would actually create a lot of confusion. The labels need to continue to be "Mokulele Hwy" and "Piilani Hwy" and "Hana Hwy".

Yeah, in dealing with tourists, it's a completely different ball of wax. If they're from mainland US, they all want to talk about "Route ##" which nobody knows if they ask for directions.

In general, the street names are AT LEAST as prominent as the shields, and in some cases, the shields are basically missing.

I couldn't tell you. The URs I see would come from folks at least familiar with the area -- thinking they should take a certain path, not where Waze directs them.

I guess what it boils down to is that even the signage is lacking for the shields... here is an intersection with Piilani Hwy: https://www.google.ca/maps/@20.7617903, ... 6656?hl=en

No shield, but street name there.

Then you get these: https://www.google.ca/maps/@20.7854794, ... 6656?hl=en

Which are even worse. But those green signs are pretty good: https://www.google.ca/maps/@20.7857917, ... 6656?hl=en

Further data point... if you look at the GPS coords of residential areas, it appears it is being used by locals. Or at least a lot of people visiting locals...

Specifically, if you look at Kahului, there aren't really any vacation rentals (that I'm aware of) in those areas, and yet there's plenty of GPS trace.

So, I'd say we've got a strong local contingent.

Except as soon as a shield is applied, the street name is not shown. Or so I am told.

Yeah. You'll still see it in the turn instructions, but the street name won't be shown on the map.

I'm not certain if you see the streetname in your "current street" bubble near the bottom of the screen when there's a shield or not.

I do agree that it's beneficial to have the streetname.

What I don't agree with is that it being beneficial to have the shield - at least on Maui.

I agree, in general. However, there may be junctions where the tourist might be confused by local names and expects, based on signage, to see a route shield. Just leaving that prospect open.

What's your sense on Maui about how commonly local residents use Waze? Most of the URs seem to come from tourists, so I wondered.
