Freeway Exit Naming

Post by Nagamasa
Hey,

Just a question for everyone--what do you prefer hearing/ seeing?

So it seems like Nova Scotia sometimes does their "split" exits in either alphabetical order, or by cardinal direction (Exit 00[ABCDEFGH...], or Exit 00[NWSE])

Now in the latter case, do we want TTS to say "Exit 16 East" or "Exit 16Eee" ? If we want the former, we would have to be naming them "Exit 16 E :..." with an extra space between the number and the cardinal, and the cardinal and the colon

The standard is the order they appear on the big green sign, from left to right.

If it is about cardinals, use a space for it to read the cardinal, but if it is about having multiple exits under same number (eg, a,b,c) then don't use a space.

I agree with @doctorkb.
If yo listen to this segment TTS you will hear that the no-space sounds well and since it match the BGS there is no question here in what to use.

This is not a deviation.
Matching the BGS is always first priority.
Am I missing something?

To me it doesn't matter if it says A B or C or N E or S.
It need to match the BGS.
If the sign is saying "Exit 13N: Hwy 118 N / Truro / Airport" I believe that TTS will us 'an' for the letter N and not 'North'.
If you share a PL for the BGS example you sent it will be useful.

TTS works well and not using the E for East or N for North when there is no space.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes. Exactly as the TTS sounds for the two exits. Match perfectly the BGS.

doctorkb, unfortunately that wasn't what I was asking.

I'm referring to the exit number itself:

The the letters themselves are implicit cardinal directions--do we want to hear "Exit thirteen north" or "Exit thirteen enn"?

I agree as well--hence I'm asking to confirm a deviation from our standard naming practice to support the pronunciation of the cardinal direction.
