In the US I believe it was confirmed to align with the Metropolitan Statistical Areas defined by the US govt. These were the same entries that used to be visible on the home page where you could see how "complete" an area was in terms of map maturity and users.
Whatever happened to the map maturity thing? I remember seeing it a couple years ago when I first started using Waze but haven't seen it for awhile.

Can you count unique over a week? I understand there are circa 400k registered UK (inc NI) wazers so if only 10k or so are actively using that's a little disappointing!

Bear in mind that the client has a limit on how many wazers it shows (in an undefined area not necessarily equal to the current screen). Can be changed in the pref file but I believe the default is 80.
