Thanks for posting!

It's great to see Wazers unite to help eachother and it's very interesting to hear how things are happening to respond to the event.

Editor Response to Hurricane Matthew on the East Coast USA

Postby spedracr » Fri Oct 07, 2016 7:59 am

I wanted to take a minute and share what’s been going on along the East Coast for the past few days and the wonderful contributions by editors from all over the Waze community in response to hurricane Matthew.

  • The Waze USA VEOC Slack team was activated and when WazeCon 5 level was reached a "All hands on deck" request was sent out looking for help from all editors in dealing with Hurricane Matthew. Currently we have 300+ members signed up

  • 300+ Emergency Shelter locations have been entered into a Waze provided sheet for upload into the Waze app for users to reference as they flee the storm.

  • Interstate I-26 in South Carolina had over 90+ miles of closures entered to support "counter-flow". The State made the East Bound lanes into West Bound lanes only to help with the flow of traffic leaving Charleston SC.

  • Interstate I-16 in Georgia had over 100+ miles of closures entered to support "counter-flow". The State made the East Bound lanes into West Bound lanes only to help with the flow of traffic leaving Savannah GA.

More will be added as events unfold.

Second update. Sunday night 10/09/2016

As of this afternoon
  • So far we have had 55 different people submitting PL's for closing

  • 28 different people putting the closures in place,

  • 1,759 total PL's for closures with 5,886 different segment id's closed,

  • So far 5 different states affected. FL 339 closures, GA 54 closures, NC 479 closures, SC 740 closures and VA 132 closures as of this post and the count is growing
.

GREAT JOB by everyone. If you would like to help all are welcome https://waze-usa-emergencies.slack.com/ If you need an invitation http://bit.ly/Waze_USA_VEOC

For now we would like to say THANK YOU
everyone that has helped with the response to the hurricane for all your hard work over the past 24-48 hours. TENS OF THOUSANDS of people are seeking shelter in over 250 shelters throughout FL, GA, and SC.

We appreciate everyone from other regions who have come to help.

Special thanks to some of our other VEOC leadership: keepfsusafe, havanaday, crazycaveman, jwe252, nzahn1, ialangford, spedracr, and others I am sure I am forgetting.

Was going to try and list some impact stats however not all states/counties have been able to submit damage information. Here is a link for weather.com that has a lot of different information about the storm that you might find interesting.

Quick update on our efforts. As of now over 900 roads have been closed in waze and more closures are coming in almost faster than we can add them. Editors from all over the US have been helping. There are to many to mention individually but I want to say thank you to all that have helped. Though we still have much work left I am proud of what's been accomplished in such a short time. More to come later.
