Speed cameras

Post by mlbrickner
Are there speed cameras in Mississippi? I don't think there are, but I'm starting to see them pop up on the map.

I've never seen them anywhere in the state. I periodically see people reporting them in the Memphis area, but they're just confusing the optical red light sensors for enforcement cameras.

Yeah, Memphis and Germantown still have them, though Germantown has actually removed a few. I should have been more specific and said the Mississippi suburbs of Memphis. I think once they re-worked a few intersections they finally realized that they weren't really needed. I've always made the argument that red light cameras are nothing but a band-aid for poor traffic light timing or intersection design in the first place. Fix the intersection and lights and people will probably be less prone to run them.

Those along Goodman Rd are for controlling the lights. Memphis briefly had one at the light at Winchester Rd and Lamar Ave but it was only there for about a month or two. I think they operate on X band (which I have turned off on my V1).

Last time I looked the red light camera ban is still in place in MS. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I lived in the state for four years and never once saw a speed camera. I did, however, see several red light cameras, mostly around Southaven and Columbus. I understand the state legislature banned them, so there should be no new red light cameras, but I don't know if that applies to speed cameras as well.

Sometimes I think people post a speed camera when they mean to indicate a cop is there running radar. Or they mistake the red light traffic cameras that have replaced in ground sensors for something else. That's the only explanations I can fathom, as I see randomly placed speed cameras in Alabama all the time, when no one around here uses them.

Memphis has (or had, years ago) red light cameras in the suburbs. I specifically remember one along Germantown Road next to the old Schnuck's grocery store, because at night one could sit in the parking lot and watch the camera flash constantly as people made legal left turns off one of the side roads. I don't know if it was malfunctioning or what, but it always freaked me out.

I haven't heard anything about MS repealing the red light camera law, but I suppose they could be for speeding only, which is probably legal there. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if a city ignored the law and installed those things anyway.

I'm in Alabama and all of the intersections in my area here have lights that are camera-controlled, and some are radar controlled. But they are strictly for light timing, not enforcement. Those cameras are mounted on the same arm as the lights themselves, usually. The radar-equipped ones operate on a different band than police radar so they don't set off detectors. This doesn't stop people from occasionally reporting them as red light or speed cameras on Waze, though.

Thought this might need an update - and a question

I used to live in Southaven - recently moved. I've noticed that the new lights on Goodman Road between Olive Branch and Southaven have cameras and radar. I know it's radar as it sets off my Escort detector at full power for about 200 yard before the light - and runs about 1 miles out. It's fairly focused and one per side. As you will get 2 discrete radar pings.

Point being - there are afew up now and more will go up as the rest of the new intersection lights are put up. They are all the same. Cameras on the on the poles off the road and aim in all directions - lights also.

The radar is next to to the lights on the arms. They are triggered by the lights it seems - as when the lights go red - they come on in that direction.

Has MS repealed the previous law on tickets from electronic sources? Meanwhile I have put these red light/speed cams on the map twice now. and it seems to get removed.

That's what I thought, but since I have only lived in Mississippi since 2012 I figured I'd ask to make sure. I know in other states I have seen signs stating that there are radars enforcing speed and I would assume Mississippi would legally have to post these signs, too. But like I said I just figured I'd ask before I did anything about them.

It took me much longer than I thought it would, but I finally found this article. The only ticket you can get is for violating tolls.
