I am working on a special mount that can project a HUD mode of Waze on the windshield. The transparent image on the windshield is readable and the same as looking at your phone. I have a working prototype which I am currently testing. The solution is very simple and compact and doesn't require any changes on the phone. Is there interest within the Waze community for a HUD mount?

Current phone display technology can't get anywhere bright enough to be used during the day. That's strictly for night time driving, correct?

HUD mode use

Postby nikos2wheels » Sun Apr 21, 2019 6:24 pm

I've seen some posts on this forum about Waze bringing HUD mode functionality. This request is also the 5th most popular suggestion in the Waze Suggestion Box with 6000+ votes.

Currently there are two ways of using the phone as HUD. One is to place the phone on the dashboard and see its reflection off the windshield. This option only works at night (with current phone display technology). The other one is to buy a product like HUDWAY glass and see the phone's reflection off a half-mirrored glass (combiner). This option extends the use to low light conditions but is not really usable in daylight.

When Wazers ask for HUD mode what is their desired mode of use (windshield at night vs combiner on dashboard)?

I am asking because either mode of use can be achieved via hardware solution, instead of software and you would not have to wait for Waze to eventually implement it.

Head up display would be an amazing feature, because right now it is very unsafe to use the phone.
Why don't you make WAZE compatible with "https://www.navdy.com/" ?
It would be so awesome to set alerts or other situation with a gesture!

I absolutely agree. I was driving home tonight with my favorite setup.

Waze providing turn-by-turn, and hazard alerts

Plus,

A "HUD" app giving me a "inverse" speedometer.

If waze integrated a HUD display, here are the items I'd like to see:
  • black background
  • BIG white speedometer
  • distance to turn
  • small turn indicator (right turn, bear right, sharp right, etc (maybe getting bigger the last .2 mi
  • red alerts for hazards, police, cams, etc

The reason I though Waze might be interested, is that a lot of the "legacy" GPS solutions are moving in this direction. From built-ins like BMW, Mercedes, and even Cadillac; to stand-alone GPS units like Garmin.

Plus, all the apps.

I feel this is a feature people will be looking for in the future, if not now.

You all should probably take your request to the Waze Suggestion Box, I doubt staff will read thru these comments:

HUD-Heads up Display Solution

Postby Ogram88 » Thu Dec 03, 2015 5:24 pm

I did a lot of searching and I found an app in the Android market to switch the orientation of your phone to help make Waze work with Heads up Display. What the app does is switch your phone screen temporarily to be upside-down and backwards. If you put your phone on your dash it will mirror right side up on your windshield glass. If you were a part of the kickstarter.com buy of the HUD glass stand for your phone it will work even better. This way you can use any navigation app as HUD. The app us called " Rotation-Orientation Manager " if you choose the option "Reverse Portrait" that will make your phone like HUD-Heads mode.
