Editing Collaboration - Locked Road - N4 Sligo/Longford

Post by arthurohara
My greatest frustrations in editing on Waze is encountering locked road segments.

Take for example, the entire N4 between Sligo and Longford is locked, including segments in towns en route.

I would be most grateful to know if there is a logical reason for the locking of the entire N4 between Sligo and Longford? It prevents anyone else editing new segments to it, of which there are plenty and prevents the map from being extended and enhanced.

I've also come across a plethora of similar annoying locked road sections throughout the country.

I've searched the Wiki and forum to no avail in finding a logical answer to locking down such long lengths of roadway when there is editing a-plenty to be conducted relative to it.

I normally send in requests to unlock from the live map.

I'm submitting this post as envisaged in the post entitled "Editing Collaboration" by davidg666.

Most grateful for some guidance and assistance if possible.

Afternoon David,

Thank you for your response - appreciated.

I travel N4 & N5 regularly to Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo so I have as much editing scenarios in the track provided from those drives on the route that I presently need. I also divert off the route when time permits to try and take in important road connections and to complete others. It just might be a bit premature to take on more. Most of the west of Ireland is well known to me as I'm a native westie and also worked throughout most of the jurisdiction in a previous employment. I don't think it should be necessary to become Area Manager just to ascertain why that lengthy segment of the N4 is locked and to possibly get it unlocked, even temporarily so that I can try and enhance the route further.

The "stretch" of road I'm referring to is about 100 kilometers in length not to mention locked road segments in Towns en route. Its not the type of thing that could get locked down accidentally. Seems its done for a good reason. Again I would not like to intrude if its been done by an editor for a good reason.

Maybe whoever locked it down will see this post in course and resolve the issue so that I can get on with trying to improving Waze in Ireland for the betterment of all drivers.

Happy and safe motoring.

Take Care,

Arthur.

If you're familiar with that section of the N4, I suggest submitting a request to become area manager of it.

Failing that, find out who (if anybody) is area manager for that area (there's a layer in the old editor for showing this) and contact them, or see who the most-recent editor of that section of road was, and contact them.

I think sometimes roads have been locked because the lock status of a road once had an effect on the routing server but now the same lock status is just used to stop the road being edited. I think there are still references to this old behaviour in some parts of the wiki.

I spoke with @llayden last week about road editing. He said he rarely deliberately locks roads, but sometimes accidentally leaves a road locked when editing it because he doesn't notice that the lock is there. I've noticed that it's easy to do that too - if you have editing rights for a locked road, then it's easy to forget to unlock it, but if a locked road is edited by somebody with a high permissions level, then it can only be unlocked by an area manager or somebody with the same permissions level.

Summary: for the bit of N4 you're referring to, either become area manager for that area or find the most-recent editor of that bit of road and PM them to unlock it.

Hi Guys,

The problem seems to be that someone locks the road, then I edit the road and because I am level 3 that gets in the way of other editors. I will ask support if they will release all locks. I will also be more alert to watching out for this and in the meantime I have unlocked the N4 from Sligo to Longford.

I asked support to release all locks where I was the last editor. Here's their answer:

"There is no such option, we have rules and we can't change them, if a higher rank blocked the segments, other with lower ranks can't edit them or unblock them, they should locate those segments, contact with the local AM and request to unblock them."

Of course most of Ireland doesn't have AMs and you can only find out who is an AM via the old editor.....

Not very satisfactory!

You can ask for specific segments to be unlocked by pasting a Permalink to the Update Requests forum. Be sure to include the name of the region/country in the subject.
