Overnight UK Road Closure not on Map

Post by a2bpdq
Last night the A417 Southbound was closed for roadworks for 12 miles from around Birdlip Hill to Cirencester in Gloucestershire. The closure was scheduled from 8:07pm to 6:00am, according to the Highways Agency live traffic status. It came to my attention early this morning when I found a Wazer had reported a missing exit problem at 10:37pm. Permalink: Junction of A436/A417 where missing exit was reported

Why was the Waze map not already updated with this closure? How many other closures around the UK are left unmapped like this? Is it a policy not to mark certain short-term closures on the map?

If I come across this situation again, with a road closed by roadworks, with a few hours left before the road is scheduled to reopen, what is the best way to handle it?

Thanks, Andrew (a2bpdq)

The Closure Monitor did, indeed have trouble last night. The data feed from Highways England failed at about 6pm and didn't resume until about 7:30am this morning - presumably when someone arrived at their desk at HE, opened their email and saw the warnings!

I did start to do a few of them manually myself last night. But the Closure Monitor is handling literally hundreds of major road closures every night. Plus I was tired ;) so I only got a few done.

Well, unfortunately, I've had to do that. :(

The Highways England feed died again at 13:40 and we didn't spot it until too late to contact HE. It will likely be down all weekend.

Perhaps we could add a post to the "about closure monitor" thread when we notice the HE feed is down.

Looking at the edit history for the affected segments, it's clear that Timbones' ClosureMonitor tool had been dealing with the closure information provided by Highways England here earlier in the week, but didn't do anything last night. This suggests either there was a glitch in the tool preventing it from doing anything last night, or it wasn't provided with the correct information from Highways England for last nights closure...

So in general, it's definitely not policy to ignore closures on major roads like this, and the provision of ClosureMonitor has been a major benefit here in a) providing a almost entirely consistent level of closure accuracy (including being able to respond in realtime to any closure adjustments flagged up by Highways England) on the roads it's designed to monitor, and b) then freeing up valuable editor time by handling all of these closures, giving us the opportunity to then look into other closures which may still be justified in including in Waze but which we might previously have overlooked/not had time to deal with due to the amount of major route closures that we used to have to deal with manually in the past.

If a route is known to be closed in reality for more than the next few minutes but isn't showing up as closed in WME, and if you've got the necessary editing rights to add a realtime closure manually, then I'd certainly suggest adding it, especially on a road like this (as opposed to, say, a quiet cul-de-sac in the middle of nowhere) where not having it marked as closed in Waze would almost certainly then lead to Wazers being told to use it.

This is the one real weakness of ClosureMonitor - when it works it works so damned well that we take it for granted that all the roads it can monitor will be closed as required, but because we don't then pay any real attention any more to closure announcements for those roads, when something does go wrong it's then less obvious to us that a needed closure may be missing from the map...
