Section of R138 now called N11?

Post by YanisKyr
Hi guys, this was triggered by this user report and seemingly a section of R138 is now referred to as N11 on the signs.

At least up to R815 Anglesea Rd/Beaver Row according to street signs from SV (below). Further north, I can't find any signs referring to it as N11.

Do you agree this stretch should be renamed to N11 and upgraded to Major Highway?

The user is mistaken - this road *was* the N11 up until 2012, when it was redesignated the R138. The local authority just hasn't changed the signs yet :) (I presume they'll replace the signs when the fall over/wear out/get crashed into :) )

Absolutely not! We changed it from the N11/MH to R138/mH in 2012 - these forum posts talk about it:
Is that OK? I'm happy to debate if there's any controversy, of course - but unlike many roads around the place that have been redesignated, I think this one is reasonably clear. It's just a pity that there are so many old signs around!. Of course, many (if not most) of the SV images are from 2009, and the redesignated only happened in 2012.

I see that you replied to the UR too, so let's leave it open in case the reporter gets back to us.
It is a bit daft that they left many/most of the old signs in place. At least the white markings on the roads got repainted a bit sooner. Plenty of other roads (like the former N9 in Carlow/Kilkenny (now replaced by the M9)) still have signs marking them as the N9.

(where I live, most housing estates have had their speed limits reduced to 30km/h, so there are lots of new signs, including for roads only about 50m long. That's four new signs (2x30 on in one direction at the start of that road, and 2x50 in the opposite direction). I wonder what that costs! I suppose it'd be possible to go from 0..(>30)..0 in the space of 50m...)

(Google Maps seems to have the road naming and types correct now; Apple Maps is still wrong and has the N-roads running through the city centre...

The N11 Now begins at the Junction of Mount Merrion Avenue. The change happened when Varadkar was Minister for Transport some years ago. The change of road designation was to allow responsibility of sections to be distributed between Councils an NRA. However, the old N11 signs remain along the 'R' sections of the road and this is not reflected in satnav or other mapping which only recognize these roads by their correct R numbers. It all boils down to local authorities failing to renumber the road signs.

It would probably be sufficient to cover the N11 with an R138 "sticker". Any robin hoods in the area?
