Hamlets, CDP, Zip Codes

Post by Inactive user -1649923503-
This is the second part post regarding City Naming, please make sure you have had a chance to read the post on Duplicate City Names. We have encountered many issues with people utilizing mailing addresses or other city names than what currently exists in WME. There are many considerations here and this issue has been long debated topic. And there is many complexities to this issue.

Big issues:
Finding accurate and definitive boundaries if we were to add any alt cities
Possibility of duplicate cities being created/used
Not all places might need the same solution

Some areas that this has been a problem is Queens, and Long Island. Im sure there are quite a few others.

The Suffolk GIS has great boundaries for the hamlets, which maybe a good testing site.

Ideally start in a concentrated area and expand. We should discuss pro/cons first before starting any test and I ask if anyone has case examples that they have implemented that may help with the discussions.

Following up, still no updates on this issue. I hope that some progress can be made as this is an issue that we've juggled with for years and I know especially coming from the Long Island perspective where Towns, villages, Hamlet's are the norm better guidance is needed to help address some common addressing issues.

I was under the impression that there was no official stance on Hamlets, this has never been reflected in the forum or Wazeopedia. Per PhantomSoul this was a regional issue. And locals were not to be involved in the debate. I would have preferred a utilization of hamlets on Long Island. I would urge the NOR leadership to address this as I know it impacts many end users from direct reports and I continue to experience issues with this when down in New York.

The challenge when this was looked at years ago by a team of editors (nzhan1, shadowmasterCM, joyriding, QW, dsfargeg, johnsninja58, beachbumli247, whoaitspete, PZ) for NY alone was we couldnt find a standard to work upstate in the Adirondack and for Long Island.

The hamlets of LI matched CPD maps and were pretty well indicated in Suffolk County GIS*. There was complexities to the Hamlets of ADK making it more of a pain to utilize as they often spanned greater areas.

I dont know what happened to the initiative but the goal was to try and map some for Long Island as the towns such as Hempstead really are not an accurate location, and villages and hamlets are the way people identify their location and more reflective of the cities already in existence on Long Island. Currently the Hamlets are quite smudged and not well defined in many areas, however this appears to cause little issues. Its more where they dont fully extend that you will often find URs.

There was also discussion from TheLastTaterTot about tackling one of the neighborhoods of Queens. This of course would have the small issue that house numbers in Queens are hyphenated to reflect the building number and closest cross street, but I dont think that was ever viewed as a significant hurdle.

*Ironically we did discover that there was fine print indicating that County and town GIS may slightly differ in boundaries.

Agreed that a universal state policy will be difficult. However there is no guidance at all other than to implied city/towns and fixes for issues continue to be patchwork.

The challenges exists since on Long Island Nassau County has only 2 cities and 3 towns... but 64 villages and 60 hamlets. And to further complicate things some of these villages/hamlets straddle the border of two towns/counties.

Suffolk County has 10 towns, 32 villages, and even more hamlets, many which cross town borders.

In the end, mapping them will be a complicated task but this continue to be an area of challenge for the Long Island community which I feel ultimately will make the waze map stronger. Maybe an approach of starting west and working your way east on Long Island (less dense to more dense population) could be a way to evaluate the process.

Starting out West

Hamlet of Springs NY vs East Hampton NY

We had an issue with the address for this location, East Hampton Point, a while back.

Its in Springs NY part of East Hampton. The company lists their address in East Hampton however we have it mapped as Springs NY. Suffolk GIS also has the address as East Hampton. A fix for this location would need more guidance.

For clarification the above example says on their website
FOR USE IN GPS:
295 Three Mile Harbor/Hog Creek Road, East Hampton, NY 11937
they may use Springs NY for mailing

I think in hamlet scenarios you might have to have a dual town name. Which one is primary is a question? However without guidance cleaning up basemap imported city names would only make things worse.
