That device requires that you place your phone on it to reflect the screen directly and whatever app you decide to use with it has to offer a mirror display mode, if it doesn't then your device is useless.

I don't know if Waze ever plans to support HUD/mirror mode, while I have spoken about it with a Waze product manager directly once, I never heard about it again since and it never shows up on any kind of early feature announcements, which suggests it might not even be on their roadmap. (Edit: Heard a rumor that it might be after all but no details or ETA for now.)

I'm not looking to advertise for any product so I'll keep the name blurred for now, but in case Waze would never release a in-app solution for HUD display, there seems to be good alternatives out there.
I personally ordered this device (which I haven't received yet) because they advertized using Waze images showing that their product was compatible:

I doesn't need you to place your phone on the device, you can just wirelessly stream your phone's screen on it (like with Apple Airplay) so your phone can stay somewhere else while you use it, and it has its own built-in screen which already mirrors the image, so that you can use any app, even it that app has no built-in mirror/HUD mode.

Sounded good to me but it was also a Kickstarter project, so while I decided to back it up a few months ago, I didn't feel it was ok to talk about it here because Kickstarter projects can be good but they can also promise a lot and not deliver in the end. So when I do receive it and when I'll have time to test it for myself and figure out if it's worth buying or not I can update you.

Too bad this isn't where +1's should be made as they will have no effect at all in this forum ;)

Yes HUD! Would love this mode. If someone doesn't want it they don't have to use it. But for those of us who would, it'd be great to use with a new product like HUDWAY.

I'd gladly pay for this feature.

I totally agree! It should really improve Waze visual for driving at night without distractions and eye deviation.
