If you do a lookup on USPS.COM of an address on the "WESTLAKE" USPS Route, it will give you Bethesda, MD as the destination "city." And the USPS site gives BETHESDA as the recommended city name for the 20817 ZIP code, although it also accepts WESTLAKE.

There is a workaround for this. As the image below shows, the ZIP code appears in two places on the screen -- you're looking at the one in the upper left. The one in the top center is a link; click on it, and you get the blue rectangle that shows you which city name is "recommended" by the USPS for that ZIP code.

Can someone elaborate a little on the application of alt city names, or point me towards associated documentation? The only place I've seen them used so far, for the most part, is for border streets that have HNs in different cities on each side (or one in city, one not).

Thanks for the replies, super helpful.

Big job.

But based on some past and recent search result URs that were like pulling teeth to figure out, this is a welcome development - both the guidance and this script.

Doesn't seem to be working today for me. Just checking to see if anyone else is having trouble as well or if it is just me....

This script has stopped working for me again. I have disabled all scripts except this one, deleted and reinstalled it (2018.08.18.001), disabled and re-enabled all of its options, bypassing the corporate network, and yet it is still not functioning and the error console is blank except for a recaptcha timeout.

What should I check next?

MapOMatic wrote:Apologies for the late reply. Did this fix itself or are you still having issues?

Still no joy.

All scripts disabled except for this one (and TamperMonkey to run it).

Chrome 70.0.3538.110
Windows 10 Home 1803, OS Build 17134.407

Network connectivity through employer's unfiltered guest wifi.

Can see the USGB tab on the sidebar, all three checkboxes enabled. No city name or zip code at top of editing area, no red boundary lines.

Only one error in the console, appears to be related to native WME:
Uncaught (in promise) Timeout - http://www.waze.com/:1

Next step will be to connect through my phone's hotspot, which doesn't work here, if you need me to go that route. Let me know. But the script is present and not throwing any errors.....?? Strange.

How reliable, or 'gospel' is the data source behind the ZIP code boundaries that this script calls in that we use for alt cities?

I've noticed numerous moderate variances from the boundaries available from this site, for example: https://www.zipmap.net/

Indeed and well aware, thanks for the friendly reminder. Just trying to find the best informational resource when deciding how best to define alt addresses.

russblau wrote:Plus, looking at that private site, I notice that it shows a lot of ZIP code boundaries running down the middle of roads. That is very unlikely to be correct since, in most cases, the same postal route serves addresses on both sides of the street.

Boundaries running down the middle of roads exists predominantly in both resources, so that attribute alone doesn't seem to serve to help distinguish their usefulness from each other.
