New! Nodes Closed feature

Post by HeziBez
Hello everybody!

We have some exciting news for you!
We have the ‘Closure On Nodes’ feature activated in Beta.

Timeline -
The feature will be active in Beta for 5 days starting today, Feb 5th.
On Monday, Feb 10th the feature will be released in production unless we see major blockers.

How will this feature help?
Up until now, when closing a road stretch you had to pay attention to ensure that traffic wasn’t accidentally routed through the junction between the closed segments. To avoid this situation you had to close all the segments which lead to the junction as well. We believe the changes will make mapping Major Traffic Events and closures easier and more intuitive for both editors and partners.

How does the Closure on Nodes feature work?

1.Close two or more consecutive segments as usual
2. On the bottom of the closure screen, you will now also be able to see the Nodes Closed screen. The screen indicates whether the nodes are open or closed and allows you to change the state of the node by flipping the switch. When a node is closed, you’ll also see an indicator symbol on the map on the closed junction

Please note! When adding a closure for consecutive segments the default behavior will close all nodes with adjacent closed segments and open on the edges. This behavior is more intuitive as easier and will allow you to have a better overview of the closed nodes.

Some routing cases to be aware of:
#1 When closing 2 consecutive segments please pay attention that the entire node is closed for traffic now. Even navigating from between two open streets over this node will not be possible.

#2 If you close two-way segments in just one direction, you will not be able to close a node.

# 3 - When opening a closure on only one of the consecutive segments, the node will still remain closed on the adjacent segment. You will still see the closed nodes icon on the map and traffic through this node from any direction will not be possible.
The same thing would happen if you were to flip the switch on just one of the consecutive segments. So make sure to pay extra attention to that while editing the map.

The beta phase -
Please note that this will be open in Beta for only one week, so make sure to share with us your feedback, if you wish, once you tried it.
We won’t be able to extend the beta for it, as all closures which will be done in beta, will be affecting routing, but won't be projected into the production version of the WME.
Meaning edits in the production version will override the closures you’ll do in beta.
Therefore, to avoid these mistakes, during the beta time we will suggest you to closed access segments “old school” to be safe.

Last but not least, we have also created an amazing tutorial video for you. You can find it HERE!
We believe that it will be a great asset to share across the community or with partners you work with, to ensure the good use of the feature.
If you wish, we encourage you to add your local translation into this spreadsheet, we will add it as a translation to the video in our YouTube channel :)

Happy editing!

I was so happy when I saw this topic.
However, it isn't exactly what is most needed

We still need RTC on turns

Yes he can, if the segment is not part of the closure to begin with.
This is actually some of the advantages this feature has, you won't need to make a 'fake closure' on segments which are not part of the closure itself, and they will be routable.

Hey guys!

Thank you very much for all your comments.
We are very happy to read that the feature itself works as it should, and you got the chance to use it and enjoy it. As we said we really do believe it will make your efforts on closures easier.

Saying that, we already have few issues addressed by you, which we looking into:
** Closers icon overlapping the A,B icon on the the connected segments
** Sharing the logic in which we order the list of closures

One of main issues that were raised by you, here in this thread, is ‘RCT on turns’, in relation to this new feature. It is important for us to take this opportunity to explain that one wont stop the other. Developing the ‘closers on nodes’ feature was relatively easy to develop, for what we believe has a lot of impact by easing your editing experience.
Moreover, this feature will also be the technical base for defining the ‘RTC on turns’ feature.

So please, stay tuned for more details. It is not going to happen tomorrow or the next day but it is in the research.

We appreciate your patience,
Let us know if you have any questions,
Hezi

Thanks for your reply!

Another "bug" I found is that when you select two way segments and one way ones and set a closure, WME now seems to group them in A to B and B to A closures:

so if you need to change them later (eg duration), you receive an error message:
"Closure change causes closure of a single direction of a bi-directional segment with closed node."

I think it would be preferable to group all the two-way segments apart from the one-way segments

Thank you for that, please report it as a bug in the WME beta

Can we assume that real-time traffic opening an RTC segment (assuming "HOV/Service Road adjacent" is not selected) will also open corresponding nodes to traffic?
