Lane Guidance is now available in WME!!!!

Post by
Hi Editors,

Hope you are all safe and healthy!

We are all super excited to announce that Lane guidance is now available in WME.

What is the Lane Guidance Feature?
The ability to map the number of lanes and directions for a specific segment in WME that will allow us to provide clearer driving instruction and a smoother driving experience to drivers.

What have we done?
  • We have been testing Lanes both in WME and in the app in the last few months with your fellow Beta Editors and we are now ready to enable the feature in production.
  • We have been working with your country coordinators in order to apply the best lock rank for your country. Lanes guidance will be locked to L4 as default and we will adjust the lock in the next few days.

Important to know
  • Currently lanes are not supported for Junction Boxes, that's the next item the team will work on once we finalize Continue Straight and TTS.
  • Lanes are not supported for Roundabout, currently it is not planned.
  • Editors with a lower level won’t be able to see the lanes tab and lanes data in WME for now.
  • Editing segments with lane guidance, i.e: splitting them, will cause lanes data removal so make sure to add map comments where necessary.
Where can we find more information about Lanes?
We created this Lanes Knowledge Base in order to help you start smoothly and have a snapshot of all the knowledge created during the alpha and beta stage. We’ll make sure to update it periodically with new content if needed.

What’s next?
  • We presented the feature in today’s Office Hours, if you couldn't make it make sure to check recording once is sent.
  • The team is currently working on TTS (Text To Speech) for Lanes and the indication on ‘Continue Straight”.
  • We are going to rollout lanes to the wider beta community in the client in the next few days. This will allow us to get feedback while you are mapping and increase the lane coverage.
  • We will be in touch with the coordinator to plan a per country gradual rollout to production
Ask questions publicly! A lot of Editors that tested the feature in Beta will be more than happy to help you and answer your questions. Also make sure to sync with your community and coordinators for your country guidelines.

We are here if you have any questions, doubt and feedback.

Happy Editing,
Ruben, on behalf of the Waze Communities Team

Oh, my God. I was desperately looking for the "new" function :) Listen to your volunteers, at least a little bit... :D

The Lane Guidance - Knowledge Base doc seems to have lost the title Junctions not supported from Page 16.

Question about heuristics. I understand the criteria for heuristics to work but am curious if it will still work if there are extra segments but you only map lanes on the #, highlighted in image below.

Also the Knowledge Base document says the internal should be <50m in the criteria list but later <30m in the examples. Can someone confirm which it is.

Following the UK online meetup it was implied that HQ were not working to develop lane guidance heuristics beyond the current setup, so the question from Harmonious4 is a valid one and Staff need to understand that there are more scenarios where heuristics would benefit a junction much more than the standard H & #.

I agree this isn't a show stopper for release but it shouldn't be dropped like every other project.
UK online meetup Q&A wrote:Q: Are there any long-term plans to have heuristic lane guidance work on more complex junctions than H/#?
A: "Not for now. Please send us examples of what you need and ideas they have in the WME forum. We can share it with the Product team"

It's not currently possible to map lane guidance to show it has restricted directions, you should discuss with your local community how it should or should not be mapped.

Left driving countries will reach 100% in the following weeks.

Not sure why staff are reluctant to post in public but lane guidance is now open to 100% of left driving countries also according to a post by Ruben in Centercode*.

*I know the first rule of Centercode is not to talk about Centercode but there is no reason this shouldn't be public information.

The trigger point for lane guidance can be country specific, but you can only set it based on Minor Highway and higher (currently 1km), and Primary Street and below (currently 500m). Speak to your Community Manager.

Lane guidance is fully released to 100% of users on all platforms (even integrated car systems I believe), the last group being left driving countries back in September 2020.

Sorry - but I'm positive, that someone who can't identify the meaning of the "straight on" arrow will also have severe difficulties in reading the words "Continue straight" - don't you think? So why do you need them?
That's what icons are for: avoiding text. Why display arrow AND text? Just in case someone didn't get the meaning of an arrow pointing upward? Come on!

Joachim
