Level Crossings

Post by Kevintiobraid
Now that these are active in WME and on the app, should we proactively add these in Ireland?

I haven't thought much about it, to be honest - but t certainly wouldn't hurt - especially if the crossing is more hazardous and/or on a fast road.

Ahem - I had to dig around for a while to work out how you're supposed to be able to create them. I was able to create one eventually.

As for L3 editors: do you have any idea what the default editing rank and/or the UK editing rank is for creating level crossing cameras? We haven't asked HQ to set any particular rank for level crossings, so maybe the default is quite a high level. I don't see why we can't pick a reasonable rank for Ireland (assuming we can pick our own rank; I know some things (like junction boxes) can't be set per-rank).

Therefore, if a driver needs an alert in his or her car to tell them that there is a level crossing ahead, should that person be allowed behind the wheel of a car. All drivers should be aware of their surroundings. They should read the road ahead and be aware of all regulatory and warning signage. I believe that level crossing alerts in Waze Ireland is just not necessary.
You could say the same about speed limit signs and probably some others, yet Waze assists with those too :) (I do agree that all drivers are responsible for paying attention to their surroundings and reading signs, but, well, some drivers are better at that than others...)

However: although level crossings are relatively rare here, there are a few very busy ones that cause traffic delays - and drivers hit the barriers all the time too (I know Waze isn't intended for use by trucks, but it wouldn't surprise me if many truck drivers use it). The Merrion Gates level crossing must be the busiest one in the country, and at busy times there can easily be 2km tailbacks in traffic waiting to cross it.

The level crossing alerts are certainly harmless and are possibly useful for drivers when they take a route they're not familiar with. We have so few of them that it wouldn't hurt to map them.

I believe the global setting is L4 for adding LCAs. The current ones in the UK are all L5 because they were added by L5 editors and (like cameras) they get automatically locked to the user's level.

I believe that future enhancements to the system will allow control of minimum lock level per country.

Sorry, my angry emoji wasn't directed towards Ireland  I think the minimum editor rank is a global thing, rather than country specific? I think all existing UK level crossings are locked at L5 at the moment, but I thought that lower ranked editors would at least be allowed to add new or missing level crossings, similar to speed cameras.
