Fuel Shortage In The UK - Crisis Response Update

Post by shirapashu
Hey,

As we are aware of the fuel shortage crisis in the UK, we sent a push notification in the app to help user know about the fuel availability and to help lead them  to the right stations.

The push will lead to a deep link where users can update gas availability:

I'm not at all sure this was a good idea.

The actual fuel supply in the UK is fine. The problem is that there is some difficulty getting it to all the petrol stations. This has lead to panic buying, where people top up well before they need to. Were it not for the media publicity, people might have just kept buying fuel as normal and it wouldn't have got out of hand.

The mechanism in Waze for marking fuel availability is buried in the pricing report section. Half the UK champs (including me) didn't even remember where it was and it's certainly not obvious. Judging by the flood of PURs (to which, of course, we cannot respond), few Waze users know about it either.

A further problem, is that marking a fuel type unavailable removes it from that fuel station. So Waze won't send any Wazers there any more. This is despite the fact that the unavailability is likely to be very short term. The only way to return the fuel to available is to report it's price in the app - and most Wazers won't have been sent there to do it. We will therefore have many fuel stations with now-invalid unavailable fuels, which will take a long time to clear.

Fuel supply to stations is already starting to return to normal. Queues are dissipating and availability is improving day by day.

It feels like Waze has jumped on the publicity bandwagon to promote itself, without being able to provide any real overall benefit to users.

Not too sure about this.  It does vary region by region, but the "crisis" seems to have passed now and will probably be gone by the weekend.  Sample of one I know, but I refueled today with no queues.
I suppose if it helps with reducing the annoying PUR flags saying Place Closed.....

Can you explain how availability is shown in the app?

For instance, if a fuel price is shown at a service station, does that mean it’s available?

Is the unavailable flag temporary (say 24 hours) or permanent?
If permanent, can we have a similar push notification to encourage drivers to mark fuel types as available again when they visit again.

I'm in the South-East where there are still issues this weekend, but most fuel stations are receiving deliverying at least daily so the situation changes frequently.
