Retiring the Waze Carpool Service

Post by delilush
Dear community members,

We wanted to share an update that after careful consideration, we have made the decision to retire the Waze Carpool service.

As the world continues to recover from COVID-19, people are driving more than ever before and behaviors on the roads have changed. While Waze was predominantly a commuting app pre-COVID, today the proportion of errands & travel drives have surpassed commutes. This means we have an opportunity to find even more impactful ways to bring together a global community to share real-time insights and help each other outsmart traffic - this is what has always made Waze truly special.

We want to continue to make a real-world impact by doubling down on helping cities address mobility problems such as congestion, safety, sustainability and cost. In order for us to achieve this we will be retiring the Waze Carpool service to focus the company’s efforts on better supporting drivers on the road today.

We want to thank all Map Editors who helped us along the years in mapping Carpool related interest points, providing feedback and lots more. Thanks to your support, today Waze has 150 million strong monthly active users (our highest ever!), a thriving volunteer community, one of the most robust real-time traffic data sets anywhere and thousands of incredible city partners.

If you have any questions please respond here or reach out to your Community Manager.

Thanks,

Daliah, on behalf of the Waze Communities Team

 Hi John,

We haven't finalized the last service day of Waze Carpool. Please feel free to reach out to partnerships support with further questions.

I believe sometimes the difference between successful app with millions of users and an unused app, can be something silly with the UI.
If I, a software engineer for 22 years, had a hard time setting my schedule rides as a driver and figuring out the relation between those of the settings and those of the main screen, than I guess most potential users just gave up.

Our agency relies on Waze Carpool data via API to provide rewards to commuters who use the app to carpool. We are very disheartened to learn about the retirement of the app.

Since we have hundreds of commuters who use the Waze Carpool app in combination with our system, we need to give them notice of when their carpool data will stop being available for API to our system.

What is the official date for the app to stop working?

That was a massive waste of resources, that could be spend in completing other desired features.
