Verizon LTE-iPhone5-SVD?

Postby AlanOfTheBerg » Sun Sep 16, 2012 2:30 pm

Thanks for all the updates! I have chosen to stay with AT&T for now but will continue to miss coverage (total lack of coverage) in key areas for me. But, at least I will be able to test any enhancements Waze may make to offline ability.

My last run was about a 30 minute drive offline.
I didn't get an initial route leaving my son's house (connect to his wifi wasn't good enough from where I was parked), but picked it up fine at an AT&T hotspot at a stop I had to make on the way.

My whole route was cached, so the only thing I was missing was traffic and reports.

It appears that I am now in the iPhone5 backlog......
My phone was ordered within the first hour of my son's AT&T store opening and my order status is "pending".

BUT, did you know that AT&T's iPhone 5 won't do simultaneous voice+data either when you're in AT&T's LTE markets? Granted, they only have a dozen or so now, but when they finally build out their network you will LOSE SVD in their LTE markets. Apple only put 1 radio in ALL the carriers' phones. Old GSM networks did SVD as part of the network, but add in LTE and AT&T is in the same boat as the other carriers. Also, there doesn't appear to be any way to prevent your AT&T iPhone from accessing the LTE network if it exists.

Oh, now this is starting to suck even more. Is this really true? Can you cite some articles?

According to http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/ ... n_networks, your statement is not true.

And http://www.dailywireless.org/2012/09/14 ... oice-data/ gives a little more background. If that article is correct, then the iPhone5 will fall back to 3G/GSM signaling to do SVD.

Have to admit that my info was outdated. Old information I had was that AT&T would not drop their phone back to their HSPA network in LTE markets, even to place a voice call. Looks like they changed their mind on that.

I retract my statement. SORRY for the scare!

However, when VoLTE launches the CDMA carriers will catch up again...but admittedly that'll be a couple of years.

Verizon LTE-iPhone5-SVD?

Postby gettingthere » Fri Sep 21, 2012 12:39 am

When the carriers start to do voice over LTE the phones will likely be ready. 3G is not going away for years, at least in the USA. The carriers are still trying to figure out a way to get to get rid of 2G!

It is very disappointing that the CDMA carriers did not 'force' Apple to support simultaneous voice and data with the iPhone 5.

After talking with some mobile experts at work today, they recommended, for my area, that if I want to make phone calls, use Verizon, due to reliability. But to rely more on VoIP services like FaceTime or Skype (pay for the dialing feature) so that even for "voice" calls, you're still using data, therefore retaining the ability for other data-using apps, like Waze, to operate.

Somewhat easier said than done, but more possible today than ever I suppose.
