The route preview still fails to show events along the route.

After sending a gas price, the X and Send overlaps for me on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

This, very much! It's not quite so annoying to have to hit the little 'x', I guess I've started to get used to it already, since it's the only option on so many dialogues in the new betas, but a "No" or "Cancel" button would be much nicer.

Also, sometimes, it's so slow to come up with the "Are you heading to ..." that I've already started to select a different location to navigate to, and this pops up and overrides what I was already entering. It can take so long, that I can already be typing in an address to navigate to when it asks if I'm heading to Home, thus wiping out the portion of the address that I've already entered. I suppose the delay is fine, however, before that pops up, it needs to check to ensure that I'm not already in the destination selection dialogue system before it pops that up. Actually, it should probably ensure that I'm not actively "doing" something (i.e. any where in the menus) before it pops this up, and if I'm already into navigation, it shouldn't pop up at all.

deeggo wrote:Some thoughts on Waze closing in the background.

Since a couple of weeks I changed my HTC DesireHD for a HTC One X. I found out fast that Waze closes more often in the background on my new device than on my old, although its specs are higher. That has been this way with the current market version and the last 3.4.99 betas. Switching from Waze to the gmail app and reading an e-mail can be enough to trigger this.

With closing in the background I mean that the Waze icon stays in the task bar, but when switching to it, Waze relaunches as if it wasn't running at all.

Apparently, the One X (or Android 4) memory management is more aggressive. I'm never using any task killers.

Here's some info on this subject, that was found during the development of Flitsnav, a Dutch GPS program that was experiencing exactly the same during development. I hope it can help you improve this behaviour, since several users are reporting this.

Waze closing in the background has to do with Android's Out Of Memory (OOM) management.

Some info on OOM_adj (-17 tot +15): The LOWER the value, the MORE important Android thinks the process is.

Foreground Application: -16 to 0
Visible Application: 1
Secondary Server: 2
Hidden Application: 3 to 7
Content Provider: 8 to 14
Empty Application: 15

Maybe you can adjust Waze, so that it sets is own OOM_adj to -17 and repeats that every 5 seconds for instance?

I've been (attempting to) research this more to help provide specific info on how they can help here.... -17 isn't possible without root, and I believe the app must be a system app to do this at all. And in reality, -17 is probably not a good idea.

startForeground was my next idea, but according to Google engineers this is also a bad idea, unless you want your app running 24/7. We don't really want that.

So I dug into what Waze is running as today using an app called AutoKiller Memory Optimizer (no, it's not a task killer, it's pretty cool low level view of OOM levels etc on apps etc), and it seems to always be a "Hidden app" or "Previous app" in Jelly Bean, which puts it somewhere between 7-9 on the OOM kill list. Lower is better. A "Perceptible service" is better, at around 2, but I'm failing to find how to specify that in the app code/manifest... I think if Waze can figure out how to set itself as a "Perceptible service" it'll unlikely get killed unless memory is truly low.

Today, Waze seems to have the same priority as any other background app, and since it's large it'll probably be highest on the list to be killed. I've pondered some of the tweaks/patches that adjust the ICS/JB OOM priority list but I don't want to patch my ROM constantly, and of course that would only help me out. ;) So it'd be nice if the Waze guys can figure out a way to lower their OOM priority while the app is in the background. I'm sure it can be done, but I can't find any details offhand on what to specify in the startup or manifest or such.

I'm going to experiment with making Waze a system app.. Just for giggles, see what happens. I've heard system apps have better (lower in number) priority and are "harder" to kill.

I've tried it and it sent email with link to my current location. Is that setup correct? if yes, maybe it should be called somehow else to avoid confusion.

Yes, it's correct. This is how you can share your location to someone who doesn't have waze (requires only a browser).

Hi Perlin.
I use to test the share my location.
With gmail used to send the mail, I received the link...
Here it is : http://waze.to/hu05knrdmx
If I put it into IE or Chrome, nothing appends !

I found out the link only work under a device where Waze is already installed.
So In Chrome it won't run at all...

Few more things from me...

  • I had the 'you have reached your destination' message, and then a minute later a reroute when I was not near my destination. I was going here (Essex Street): https://world.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=9& ... ers=BTTTTT but was coming up on here (the round about - which is on Waimea and Tukpa): https://world.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=9& ... ers=BTTTTT I was also off course from where I originally started (end of carrignton): https://world.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=9& ... ers=BTTTTT This seemed to happen at the same location in older versions too, maybe theres something on the map causing confusion? - i think its easy to reproduce so if you need more info let me know.
  • Another current state bug, the TTS for 'in X meters get ready to ...' should really be 'get ready to ... in X meters', from a new user perspective the current wording seems like the instructions will be repeated in X meters when in fact the action that happens then.
  • I had a weird display issue today but I dont have a screenshot (that whole using a cell phone while driving issue), the instruction was to in X meters keep left onto X road. The wording showed the X, but the on screen purple highlight showed the next road instead. ( https://world.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=9& ... ers=BTTTTT driving along courtney, instructions showed northgate, but line went to watson)
  • I dont mind the blue background of the night theme, but I cant see the smaller roads.
  • It seems to take a LOT longer to find a GPS signal, about 2-3 minutes. I use Lama to turn on GPS when Waze starts, however the store version only took 10 seconds to 30 seconds
  • There doesnt seem to be a way to cancel the 'Are you heading to ...' directions, if I click the X it routes anyway, if I leave it alone it defaults to Ok, and the only other button is 'Routes'. Could we have a 'No' button?
  • On that note, in portrait mode that popup takes up the whole screen, which is fine if im not driving but if I am theres no visibility of the map.
  • Its probably not a client issue but ill report it anyway, Great North Road (3) here: https://world.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=9& ... ers=BTTTTT (the main road) is a 50k area, however I noticed that it had a speed issue just before the turn off to London Street because traffic was going at 41-44 kph. This would be the first time ive seen a report for <10k, especially when all of the roads around it average under 50k.

I would like to put my actual location into my favourites...
I have tested via menu "Meeting / Save my current location".
It only opens my favourites and nothing else !
No button to add my current location.

By txt message it is created.

I failed to reproduce.
Do you send it with Gmail?
Can you describe your steps or attach a screenshot of the mail that's missing the link?

Same for me.
I get a link only if I use GMAIL. If I use another email function, there is no link !
