Damn Basic Editing and Etiquettes

Post by Arachnidriod
(Often neglected even by "Expert Editors") :o

1. Respecting others' work.
2. Edit only with the right reasons.... leave areas unfamiliar to those who stays around the vicinity.
3. Base editing on routing, cosmetic comes next.
4. Constantly check GPS trackers for road geometry changes.

Four main points i'll stress upon for now based on what i've learned during this 1 month editing of maps.
Add more if i had the mood  :)

1. As we're living in a internet environment, thou not compulsory but there's still some basic netiquettes which people do follow like simple no caps as that's like shouting.
So i believe when we're using waze which is a community base apps, all the more we should give considerations to each other when using functions like map editing.

It's because the apps is unique that's why people take the time to edit the maps for the benefit of all wazers.
Don't waste it just for personal preferences and agendas and take others effort for granted.
It's not possible for a single editor to complete the whole island map as it's constantly changing before you even know it.

As with all movies, to complete an antagonist, heroes must be sacrificed.
So after conquering the South China Sea, our Map King needed land for base, let's turn the roulette table and take alook.
Ahhh Bedok Reservoir seems like a fat land .... time to take over !!!

2. What's a right reason to edit you might ask, seriously i hate going into situations of edit tug of war.
Personally i prefer to edit if it's a new area or road and no one had done anything on it.
But apart from that i try to solve some map update requests and problems, usual main problems that you'll find is wrong directions, weird routing, speed cam often mis-reported and missing roads just to name few major ones and very seldom do people report about landmarks as yet.

And most problems still focuses on routing which is often due to wrong alignment of roads and directional arrows.
With the massive amendments of roads by LTA , some for new circle line ... plus many roads had being altered for dunno what reasons like changing a 3 a-side lanes to maybe 4-2 instead.
There's a also massive adding of center safety island/kerb to divide the roads so it's only common that alignment and directions if off... these changes is not visible to any road maps or satellite imagery and only editors and drivers who stays nearby or uses those roads will know.

So for me when i edit i either have spotted the problems or misalignment and i believe i could improve the routing or even some landmarks which is covering the roads or rivers flooding on carparks which i saw in mountbatten rd only than i'll edit.

Client updates only happens in 3 or 4 weeks which means you basically get 1 update per month or 12 per year at current rate.
Rampantly editing of roads will not only deprive other users/editors to see or test their edits (which could be correct ) and will probably end up having have wrong edits updated as well, depending on their cut off date within that month.
Which to me serve no purpose at all if it's wrong.

So please focus on getting the correct edit updated once instead of 10 edits and re-edits for the same road and see which lucky edit gets updated.

Wise thing to do is " IF NOT BROKEN , DON'T FIX ".

On 29 Oct while checking out a problem, discover this below ... road alignment is out and directional arrow is wrong.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c247/ ... e/Tp01.png

Today checking back again found the exclamation mark gone but problem didn't solved.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c247/ ... e/Tp02.png

I also realize the special Taxi Driveway i added barely 5 days ago was updated by chang3 , just in case if chang3 or any editors reading this, do not change again as that road is not service rd and only permissible to Taxi and i'll like to check the new update next month if TaxiWay got different color as not many such roads in SG.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c247/ ... e/Tp03.png

So in the end i have to reset the mis-alignment and directional arrows since map king is no where found when problem arises either created by he himself or didn't know what to solve but update for fun.
End result after i edit shld look like this .....come and edit here again and deserve another round of whacking.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c247/ ... e/Tp04.png

Even for near Toa Payoh Rise area till now still existed problems as i can see arrows to carpark is wrong and my edit had being tempered with again.
I no eyes to see anymore, got problem pls PM digitium directly.

Trial and Error works too, but it takes more time.
the age-old adage of "Do it Once but Do it Right" holds true.

digitium, i really like this quote of yours but only if you had follow what you preached.

2, Another example to show that it's better to leave to drivers staying nearby or drive a particular road frequently.
This i edited yesterday at potong pasir and wan tho ave junction.

Before you can right turn to wan tho after exiting from PIE to serangoon.
But now they decided to draw double white lines all the way between the underground tunnel to the traffic lights, so only those coming out from tunnel can right turn to wan tho.

Digitium i bet your OSM or whatever secret manual doesn't tells you that ... do they ?

Lazy to explain so read the pictures to see what i did.
Below are my edits and i hope no itchy fingers go edit again. ;)

And if u're from tunnel, you can't turn to potong pasir anymore.

3. Let's talk about routing today, as far as i've tried there's 3 basic ways to pave or edit a road.
Which in turns affect the accuracy of actual usage of Waze in daily routing and navigation. :ugeek:
Examples about accuracy can also be found in my other thread.

a) Draw a new road based on available off-hand map or Bing aerial image [est. accuracy less than 50%]

Some roads is low on usage nor even frequent by wazers or under the clouds in Bing forever.
So no data is available, only way is to draw free hand base on existing other maps.
Which may not help in routing but just as a reference.
Thou not recommended but can't be helped, best options is wazers volunteer to drive there and at least pave a main leading road and add the rest, trust me i know how taxing it is to pave a whole neighborhood.

b) Pave a road using yr client apps and edit into the WME. [est. accuracy more than 80%]

For editors who drive often and if there's road that's of interests to you which is not pave, just paved it and update to WME, even if you don't have computer the recorded tracks is visible in WME and good for other editors to follow up.

c) Log in to WME and use your drive logs to map new or existing roads. [est. accuracy more than 90% with afew more fine tuning]

All drive logs is recorded in yr history but please use recent logs as old logs might be outdated.
Only difference here vs paving roads is that personal drive logs, the red lines doesn't show on other editors' WME if you didn't turn pave road function on during that drive and only you yr-self can view and edit it.
This drive log function is useful when if there's a road you always traveled is constantly giving you problems, open the log and analyze what's wrong in terms of the road in place and yr GPS tracks.

That's precisely why i chose to post.
Exactly, nobody's perfect we're all to learn ... i really don't mind if someone points out my mistakes.
The Taxiway i will check it out again.

But why is it that the antagonist of this whole thing can assumed he's got the right to dominate the whole editing process, creating one after another routing problems and depriving other editors of their usage.
If his mistakes is not being pointed out, how will he learn i ask of you ??
If learning to live with bullying is what u're suggesting, than please don't interfere.

Simply because not many are active in forum so he's got rights to bully the rest of editors who didn't voice out.
The thing he does is not personal anymore as it affects the community of editors and users here.
Map problems don't post forum for discussion than do you expect me to call the police ???
Or fight outside of forum .... what kinda proposal are you hinting at ????
[/b]

Kuhlkatz wrote: 5. As editors in your country, you can all get together and discuss some things to have a more constructive outcome. Decide on standards, and lay them down.
Bickering will just divide everyone, and every editor will then just continue to apply his/her own standards anyway.
Just my 2c.

As what the antagonist said himself, others that complain about him didn't get their facts right.
Which as usual will be ignored by him, so i'm just presenting facts for him to see.
Why you think i waste so much time citing examples for discussion.
If no one dare to post and nobody knows what's actually going on, who will be around to discuss things.

I did get yr attention didn't i, even thou you're far from Africa.
I wonder why someone way out based in Africa is here defending him, doesn't he have a voice ???
I do thank you for this discussion and i hope you're doing this outta goodwill.

But if such thing is not lay out for the records, no one will even care as it's just another apps.
Frankly even if Waze shld goes to waste in the end, it doesn't really affect me at all.
And if you do read carefully, i'm also sharing my editing experiences with rest whether anyone gives a hoot about it.
Without the correct mindset, it will just end up you mention .... "every editor will then just continue to apply his/her own standards anyway."
So if you didn't understand the situation here and read every of my intentions, please stay outta this !
