Parking Icons / Markers Issue

Post by bretmcvey
Since the release of Waze client 3.5 I've begun seeing several parking icons (or at what I'm assuming are parking icons represented by a "P") appearing near my route destination. My initial thought was that this was finally a way to incorporate the parking landmark and have a icon or marker that would allow you to affiliate yourself as having parked at that location or parking lot, but after adding in parking lot landmarks to the map and following map updates no markers appeared for me related to those landmarks.

While some of these markers have valid business names, I'm seeing a lot of random names associated with markers that have nothing to do with street names or landmark names. My best guess is that this is some kind of data bleed through that's showing other users' favorite destinations within a certain radius of my destination.

Once such example below:

This location says something like "Jordan's Gaaaarage"

User Error Reports
Users are reporting errors since the naming of these markers can appear like spam. Business names are one thing, but what appear to be someone's parking spot at work or home are another story. In each case I've seen thus far there's no road segment or landmark that contains the name that they've flagged as an error.

Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I'm interested in knowing if this is a developing feature or some kind of bug.

Can you please provide a Permalink to these areas?

Specifically, I'd like to figure out the difference between the blue pin at Walmart & the grey pin at Kum & Go. The logo-ed Kum & Go is a sponsored (paid advertising) location.

The blue pin is my own parking location. That's part of the new social aspects of Waze 3.5 where you can drop a pin when you park. The grey markers with the white P are the ones I'm referring to, I'm familiar with the sponsored markers and have had no issues with these.

Related Local Error:

Kum & Go:

Northeast of the 72nd & Pacific intersection the Walmart is to the southwest of that intersection.

Jordan's Gaaaaarage (or something approximating that):

This is the location of the marker that's most definitely not business related and exist in a residential area.

Thanks for the info jasonh300, I wouldn't have assumed it was related to foursquare upon first looking at it.

It bugged me enough recently and we've had enough error reports in the area that I wanted to get a good answer. Scouring the maps looking for some kind of landmark or minute road segment that had been named with that data was the only thing that I could think of. I just reported a spam location in foursquare that was in the area, thankfully that person hasn't checked in there more than once in the past 60 days so I don't think they'll mind much.

By the way, great work in southern Louisiana (assuming you've been busy keeping that area well updated). I made a trip a few months back and relied on Waze the entire time to get me around from destination to destination with no issues whatsoever.

The parking lot icons you see come from Foursquare. You can get rid of the bad ones by searching the name through the foursquare app and then reporting them. Foursquare will remove then if theyre not an actual public parking facility. IME this will happen within a day. You can also create new ones through foursquare.

Took a while to figure it out. Someone else actually suggested it after I had complained about it for 2 months when it was in Beta.

Foursquare has guidelines for creating landmarks but they don't actually enforce those guidelines unless someone complains. You're only supposed to categorize parking in a public lot, but people in the race for points will check into the Walmart parking lot, then into Walmart, then into the electronics section, etc.

I had one of these parking icons in the middle of the expressway in front of my office and was perplexed as to why it was there...especially with the weird name attached to it. Turns out that it must've been some bored person sitting in traffic wanting to make a few points for checking in and just picked Parking as the category.
