Not exactly - I just don't go to bed when I should! Midnight to 3am is a round of "I should go to bed" - "I'll just fix this first" - "I wonder if anything is posted on the forums" - "I should go to bed" . . . .

The kids know that if I haven't woken up by 11am, they're allowed to come and shout "BREAKFAST PLEASE!" at me until I get up.

Absolutely right! I can't remember if you or somebody else mentioned this, or I thought of it myself, but I remember thinking it would be a good idea - then I forgot about it. I notice that Twister's script seems to be case-sensitive on the filtering, so I might ask him if he minds changing that - otherwise you'll only be able to filter Roadworks or ROADWORKS or roadworks etc.

I'm tempted to wait for more input - but that's my character flaw of wanting something to be perfect before letting it loose. ;) Now I've heard from the people who are keenest on this idea, we need to get it going. As soon as I've given the kids breakfast "Dad - are you messing around on Waze again?", I'll post the instructions and you can dive in.

I think it's worth a go.
Personally I'd like to be able to leave optional comments on edits in the Map Editor for these kinds of reason. So when you selected a detached road alongside seeing the last editor and the date/time they edited it could also show optional notes.
Even if roadworks becomes a proper feature there may be other reasons to leave local editors a note to help share understanding.
I know this kind of thing would take a lot more time and feedback to even approach implementing (not least the data storage implications for Waze) so the forum/wiki idea is a good thing to trial to see if its of use.

Nottingham is having another tram line too so there's some long term closures I've been putting in from Elgin too (roadworks.org).

Elgin data is available under the Open Government Licence so maybe a community browser tool could overlay it (that's not me offering to do that ;) )

What are the views?
I think it makes more sense being a document (either suggestion)as these are more editable and therefore allow local editors to add and remove items as they occur.
A forum is useful for tracking conversations but the document approach always shows the current 'live' state and still has a change history to let everyone know what changed and when it changed.

+1 for Document based

Generally, FTW is good for traffic lights and temporary closures, and these events get reported to the client. I'm planning to write a guide for this soon...

The map is (now) best for long term road closures (i.e more than 2 weeks). If you need to leave a note on the map for the benefit of yourself or other editors, then either draw a small landmark with notes or a post a UR from the Livemap (or both). If someone closes your UR prematurely, it doesn't take long to recreate it.

http://www.roadworks.org is a good resource for finding planned works in your area, and it can email you regular updates. You may also be able to find reliable sources from your council.

Me too.

Whatever format you use, it will be overlooked by the majority of editors that close URs and revert changes because they don't pay close attention to what's happening.
The best place to leave notes that everyone can see is on the map, using the methods I mentioned before.

I'll have to read through this thread when I get home as I've made a road closed in Bletchley by changing a segment to non drivable and putting a landmark over it. The road is closed for 26 weeks from November. I'm guessing this isn't the correct way to do this

Overall in agreement with the suggestion. There's a potential problem in that it might get rapidly as up to date as the A-road progress reporting on the wiki, ie not, but anything is better than leaving no clue as to why particular changes, and road-severance in particular, have occurred.

An example of my own: the Greyhound Lane railway bridge at Streatham Common Station is closed for rebuilding until April 2013. I've amended the road name with the details of the closure as a way of recording the details. I've also added a reminder to my personal diary to go back and check the state of progress in March. I'm sure URs will start to be raised if it remains closed on the map after it's reopened in the real world, but I thought it best to remind myself to visit nearer the planned reopening date. However, I accept it is not always possible to leave that sort of information in a way that is easily visible.

If this was recorded in a topic on the forum, and I turned up my toes between now and then (as far as I'm concerned, the only valid reason for leaving Waze ;) ), then at least it's recorded for someone else to note and reverse the changes.

Edinburgh is in an unusual situation because of the tramway building works. Once that's completed, it'll be a lot more straightforward for a while and I think you'll find it helpful.

How about starting with London? As the biggest urban area, it'll be a useful starting point and can be extended if it works out?

I, too, have no experience of collaborative documents. I'm very wary of updating the wiki (A-roads progress page) "in case I break it".

For that reason, I'd prefer to have a forum.

How do we put urls in a UR? I've tried it a number of times and messed it up each time, so had to close the UR and put a new one in without a link.
