How to Label and Name Roads

Post by WeeeZer14
Is there an easy way to create an index page/landing page that links to all the world-wide translations of this page?

I was editing the Junction Style Guide and someone added a link to the US version of how to determine road types to use. I figured that isn't very global of us, so added a link to the UK. Then I realized I went from US-centric to English-centric. So I'd really love to link to one page and then have people branch off from there.

Do we have to manually build something or am I just weak in my wiki-fu?

One could argue that naming and labeling are different matters. Naming can mean, figuring out what a road ought to be called, whereas labeling can mean determining how best to represent its name in text. In any case, the two verbs should be in the opposite order, as you have to know a road's name before you can label it.

Can you describe in more details what you want to have? Some of the more advanced features that link pages in Wikipedia were not added to ours. I don't know enough about the back end to know if it is easy to add or not. I do know I have sent Waze support requests for other back end features to get added to the Wiki, but it is falling on deaf ears so far. :(

As for the lookup page, depending upon what you want to do, there is some ability for linking and substitutions that are possible.

Sounds like a good idea. Don't know if there's an automatic method though.

The tautological title "How to *Label* and *Name* Roads" has been bugging me for a while. ;)

I see you set up a redirect for "How to label and Name Roads" so I have to change what I was just going to say ;)

Search the wiki for "How to label and name roads (" with the space and open paren at the end. You'll see a bunch of country specific pages such as:
How to label and name roads (United Kingdom)
How to label and name roads (Netherlands)
How to label and name roads (Italian)
How to label and name roads (Spain)

I think it would be good to have a page named "How to label and name roads" that simply contains links to those other pages. Then in any page where we have a general/global discussion, we can point to that "index" page and tell people to look up the info for their region.

For the US, we may want to go back to having a "How to label and name roads (USA)" page that either replaces the current "Road Naming (USA)" and "Road Types (USA)" pages or just links to them to provide the consistency across all countries.

I assume it came about as a language barrier issue. I figure "label" means "decide what road type to assign".
