Paving by Air

Post by
I noticed what I thought was a "Nazca" line earlier today. Following the trace though, I realized that a Wazer had decided to fly from one municipal airport to another with the paving mode on. From taxiing onto the runway, to take off, cross country, landing at another airport, taxiing and parking the plane, they had paved the entire route. There were dropoffs where network coverage was spotty, but overall, I could see the entire trip.

Needless to say, I deleted them all and sent a PM to the user.

Someone got a lot of points. :(

And yes, this user is a "high scorer".
You can either open a ticket or let a Waze Champ know.

I've/We've suggested a combination of altitude and speed as criteria for discarding this data.

And when done repeatedly, disable the user's account. :)

And the TOS doesn't specify that anyone is due to "earn points" for any reason at all either.

All that needs to get forwarded on to Ori (username: Unholy)...

When the Mythbusters took this on with a private aircraft, they couldn't go airborne with the experiment due to these rules...

I often wonder how new users climb up the ranks so quickly. I guess flying in paving mode could do it. It isn't the points that bothers me as much as the user not gaining any real editing experience through points not legitimately earned. An inexperienced user with a lot of points is dangerous.

That's the part of the response I found most interesting. My editing interest is neither the points (fun, but not necessary) or at all altruistic. It's more a selfish motivation (tip of the hat to Ayn Rand). I want a GPS that is accurate and consistent and I'm willing to expend the effort to get it. If my effort benefits anyone else, so much the better.

So thank you to all of you whose efforts have made Waze better for me. :)
