Two very different approaches and each has merit - one for simplicity and one may be better for directions . Given that it's a main highway and 100km/h speeds, the more complex may provide better instructions to the driver.

The best test is to drive both and see how they perform. Meet you in Mercer for a bacon butty on the way? :idea:

good points, thanks nzhook. it'll be interesting to see how it behaves. might take a while to drive though in every possible direction :-)
Once this is done though it will be a good guide for how to map similar intersections where ever they occur.
