Use local weather

Post by Gamersea
Here's a thought, and someone already thought the same as myself: http://waze.uservoice.com/forums/59223- ... ather-info

The idea is use local weather to give a icon for a certain area with a warning, so let's say you navigate to New York and it's very icey there, but in San Fransancisco it's s sunny. It would be nice if there would be an icon just somewhere on top of the client that says: different weather at your designation, be prepared!

I think it would be a nice feature, and this way not every road is gonna pop up when it's under ice.

Di-Ann Eisnor would also like to see local weather data utilized in Waze: http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34324

I agree, though if weather may significantly impact traffic, it may have a use as a passive warning.

I know various weather related requests are listed everywhere... so pardon if there's an official weather related thread... but with the recent release of Forecast.io http://forecast.io/ and their API http://blog.forecast.io/post/4634792366 ... t-data-api, it go me wondering if this wouldn't be a solid way for Waze to integrate some subtle aspects of weather.

Obviously we don't want Waze providing us with a 5 day forecast as wonderful as that might be... but to pull in the data stream that The Dark Sky Company has developed for their app and site to do any of the following:
  • Alert when approaching a change in precipitation or higher speed winds is about to occur given the travel path
  • Passively modify arrival times based upon the precipitation/temp/wind data to give a more reasonable timeframe for arriving at a destination.
  • A destination card could have a basic weather conditions listed.
  • Eliminate the option for reporting weather conditions... especially during inclement weather... extreme cases where roads are closed due to a hazard (fire, downed trees, ice, snow drifts, flood waters, etc.) could be handled via the closure feature or basic hazard reporting options.

I don't mean to use it as a weather report app or something like that. I mean that only in case of bad weather reports some kind of general alert could be shown on the map with a icon or something like that. That way users don't have to report every road as dangerous because of weather...

That would be great to have implemented in Waze. Also like the idea of a weather radar overlay (only when you turn it on).

Few weeks ago I was travelling in Germany and it began too snow (only on that side of Germany), would I've known that in advance then I would have used a longer but snow free route (thus faster traveling).

I also don't like the idea of trying to turn Waze into a "let's do everything" app. I already have multiple apps for weather. If I am traveling to a far away locale, I always check the weather before I leave. I can then look at the sky when I arrive to see how accurate the forecast was....

It is a good idea, however let's be realistic here, this is a GPS application, having weather is all right, but if the place is "sunny" and no hazards have been reported, I wouldn't like my GPS app beeping distracting my attention to say "it's sunny outside" The current hazard reports on weather is user based and I think it's pretty good. this is only my opinion, please don't take it wrong. 8-)
