Sure thing. From what I have seen, those parking lot roads/private roads get abused in commercial areas quite a bit...you should not have roads going around McDonalds ...

I agree with Rottie about the tiny lots....I don't like mapping them. If I see them ( ie around a restaurant ) I remove them. If the MPs show in gas lots I place a gas staiont landmark.

But there should be a better what to deal with the MPs for small lots.

Hence you have the venting and frustrations of the editor base. Too bad there is no "lock system" on the Wiki pages like there is for road segments. (Not long ago I was also the "victim" of a one word change to the wiki regarding time restricted turns)

After reading this over a couple times, I've changed some of my previously held views about landmarks.

Hospitals - What about a requirement that any land marked hospital should be one with 24 hour emergency care. I believe there is a law in the US that states something to the effect that Emergency stabilization care cannot be refused for any reason at these locations. Maybe that could be the standard to base it on?

Tiny Lots - I hate mapping parking lot roads across tiny little business lots to keep the "missing road's" MP's from showing up. Some of these are barely big enough to have the MP trigger. The Parking lot segments add so many more data points (turn restrictions, segments, junctions, etc.) in a lot of cases it hardly seems worth that level of effort. Too bad there's no "hidden parking lot", a landmark type that's sole purpose would be to suppress the MP "missing road" reports, but still not show up in the client. Since we don't have that, no choice but to use the PLot Roads. EDIT: It's also a source of bad edits from inexperienced editors, they see a MP Missing Road and then map every parking space.

3.1 - Island - not mapped

Here are examples of mapped Islands by "admin (staff)". It was my understanding that anything showing that "user" was from some kind of import Waze did (is that correct) ?

We're not "un-doing" something Waze wanted with this one are we?

I'm confused as to how we map fast food drive throughs now. Many cause traffic jams on nearby roads. I read conflicting things in the forums. Map a restaurant landmark. Don't map a landmark. Map a private road. Don't map a private road. Now this guifdeline suggestion says not to landmark restaurants. I'd love some clarification.

Secondly, I like the 24/7 emergency care requirement for hospital landmark, regardless of if its a private facility, a for profit, or nonprofit.

With the church landmark... does this mean your local churches should not be landmarks? But things like mosques should?

I have read this whole thread and there seems to be little, if any consensus and a lot of conflicting ideas, as well as confusion. Landmarks seem to serve two purposes at odds with each other,
  1. for editors: to suppress Automatic Map Problems (such as this)
  2. for users: to see what is around them, and because of the way the client currently works:
  3. to get to what is around them
Until these three functions are separated I don't see how a consensus can be reached.

jasonh300 wrote:Well, I can knock out a portion of vectorspace's objections in one easy sentence: Private businesses are not to be mapped because Waze's business model is to sell advertising to businesses that want to be mapped.

This is not a matter for debate.
Is that a quote from Waze TOS? How do you know waze's business model doesn't allow businesses and such to be mapped? Perhaps they have the infrastructure there for future plans that they feel don't conflict with their business model. Let Waze worry about their business model. We editors do not work for or get paid by waze. If they don't want businesses being mapped then they need to put it in their terms of service, or at least remove the option. Editors are users too, not employees of waze. So the matter is very much up for debate, until waze intervenes and provides enforceable guidelines. If it really is against their business model to landmark businesses why would they have the option?

I should add, we may be doing waze a favor landmarking their promoted businesses because the ones I have seen are not even geolocated properly.

Those of us who have edited for a while have seen areas where nearly everything is/was marked as you think it should be.
I don't think that - not with the way the client currently works - it would be a mess on the client, yes. I do think some major businesses can serve as useful landmarks though, and sometimes the POI info provided by landmarks is more accurate than anything else available.

daknife wrote:Okay but take a look at the when joined and post count of those of us saying NO. And compare it to yours. We are speaking from experience. I've seen areas like I described, I've looked at them in the client and they are worse than a map with no landmarks at all.

I've only been doing this for just over a year and I still feel myself a newbie compared to Jason, Bgoddette, Mapcat or Alan of the Berg. Andy's a Waze Champ but otherwise he's got the same experience level as I do, I beat him into Wazeland by three days.

We the users have no business marking any businesses. What seems like a good idea may actually be one, until it costs Waze the big advertising contract needed to keep the company and thus the app alive.
You talk like you are a waze shareholder or work for the company. That I find problematic. Who are you to say we have no business marking businesses? I don't care how much experience you have, you can have been wazing since you were born, I don't care. What does Waze say? That is what matters, is my point.
