1) The only way to have friends in Waze is to link your Facebook account to your Waze account& have your Facebook friends link their Waze accounts too. Those Facebook friends with a linked Waze account automatically become your Waze friends.

2) You do not have to be in navigation mode to earn points, just driving with Waze open will earn you driving points. Keep an eye on the last updated date/time in the dashboard as it only updates once a day.
