Really hope Waze management respects the privacy of its users, who got Waze to where it is today. Selling out to Facebook would most likely mean the end of any privacy we now have when using Waze. The last thing I want is my travels and location shared with Facebook.

I'll stay. The online universe already has all of my info and I'm under no illusion that anything I share is in any way protected by anyone, regardless of what they promise.

Such big threats. "I will quit being your free customer if you do this." Funny.
Without the users, the are no map updates, driving data, no one to advertise to. I suspect users leaving waze in large quantities would be a concern...
Ah, but FB users will flock to Waze in even larger quantities.

And they'll do for Waze what the <blink> tag did for Geocities.
I'm not suggesting it will be a good thing. I'm just saying that Wazers who leave won't be a concern to FB because it knows it has the numbers to replace them.

I was ok with apple getting Waze but FB would sicken me, its bad enough that escort live built off of waze great success. If facebook gets it, its going to suck, look what they did with FB home page, bad news. With that said even the Devil would sell it soul for a billion dollars. You feel me.?

Just in case the waze family really read these post, Waze has the potential to be something better than facebook ever could, something functional and make its own Waze book to rival any billion dollar company, by providing the most functional information to the world the makes a difference in people lives every day. The potential for this app is insane, and i sometimes wonder if they even have a clue as to what they can envolve into. With that said, lets give them some ideas as to what they can do with Waze to achieve a mass following. I will add one thing I think would be cool is an Information POP up for each city you go thru of how many break ins, murders, rapes ect would be more than interesting but still functional. What school are falling apart, Unemployment rate, number of pot holes, number of accidents. Number of police cars , the bottom line is wazers our an interesting breed of wanting functional information to make us more successful and powerful and they have a big enough jump to be the leader in an revolutionary new way of thinking and gaining a following that would put FB to shame. But in all honesty a Billion dollars could make a company go stupid. Lol

The threat is that people will stop editing the map. If a handful of users leave, it's no big deal, but if the veteran map editors decide that they are no longer willing to spend thousands of hours doing uncompensated work for an entity like Facebook, then it will hurt. The value is in the maps and the routing algorithms.

With a ridiculous number like $2,000,000,000, figure that half of that goes to the technical end, and the other half goes to the map. If you take the top 500 map editors who have done 99.9% of the map editing work, the work that we've already done becomes valued at around $1,000,000 each. Do you think they're going to cut each of us a check when the sale is complete?

That being said, if I was one of the partners, and had that kind of offer on the table, I'd have a really hard time passing it up.
Here here, I'm glad to offer my time to an independent company but not to facebook. Just go public with the company and offer the top editors stock options :)

Facebook has a granular privacy policy... that is always changing, not as well defined as it appears, and not well followed by organizations you interact with (sometimes unknowingly) on Facebook. Also, when you access the Facebook web site via your web browser, you are using an app that doesn't belong to Facebook so you have some independent control. Not so with an app on your phone. I haven't trusted waze either but I wasn't too concerned. I am concerned with FB.

If you say you have nothing to hide, I suspect you don't know what can be derived from correlations. And I'm sensitive to all this because I have been engaged in privacy fights. For example we just pushed back on a proposal for two-way mapping between vehicle identification numbers and IP addresses.

Anyway sadly, if this buyout happens I'm gone.
