Un-dividing divided roads

Postby Borgholio » Fri May 10, 2013 2:16 pm

Now that single roads have the option for a U-Turn at junctions, would it make sense in some cases to un-divide roads, at least at intersections? The goal is to eliminate erroneous "roads are too far apart" problems caused by U-turns too far away from the street junction.

It would also be good news for currently split intersections with impossible-to-add u-turn restrictions.

Be sure to not delete any main street segments as addresses will be removed!

Take both sides, change to 2-way, disconnect from opposite ends of a section, then junction together in the middle.

Not sure what you mean...leave the road divided but change to two-way?

No. :)

Example:

Step 1: Turn both sides to 2-way

Step 2: Disconnect both segments from one side of the section being undivided

Step 3: Bring the two disconnected ends together in the middle (and relalign roads as needed)

Alan, could that be added to this part of the wiki, and the text be edited accordingly?

As it reads right now, there is no caveat to preserve speed data by keeping the segments from both sides, but shortening and joining them. I taught myself a very similar technique some time ago, just by thinking the problem through and testing things, but it seems a shame that the unsplitting guide in the wiki merely advises that it might save time to preserve the half of a split road which is connected to more cross-streets.

I think I understand now. Question, what about the "V"s left over on either end? Would I simply leave them intact and only un-divide the road at intersections?

I made a little video of this process. Watch it in fullscreen or at least 720p to see details. No cursor capture was working, sorry.

I have also verified that this process works even when the two sides of the split road have different names.
