Disable POP-UPS while stopped

Post by sdschramm
Whenever I am at a red light or stopped in traffic, Waze keeps popping up messages from all over the place. They are not helpful to me, they are distracting. Especially when it is reporting things 10+ miles away. (I'm in the city, so 10 miles is a long ways)

I looked though the menus and have tried disabling these screens but they are still appearing.

How can I stop these pop-ups?

Thanks,

Scott

This "feature" has to be given a kill switch ASAP. On the way home tonight I got caught up in traffic that wasn't yet shown on the map, and so whilst at a standstill I thought I'd manually check for an alternate route, knowing that Waze itself wouldn't give me one until it became aware of the traffic ahead of me. I started to pan around the map, but within seconds it relocated itself to show me the position of a traffic report several miles away. I hit the crosshairs and started panning again, only to be yanked away by another report Waze thought I'd be more interested in knowing about. This continued for about 30 seconds before I got utterly fed up with this damn stupid behaviour and just resigned myself to sitting through the jam. If the user has manually repositioned the map, the client should NOT be overriding the position until the user has tapped the crosshairs to restore the default position again.

Between this badly thought-out feature, and the cutesy UI tweaks which might look so cool when demoing Waze to your friends whilst sat at your desk/around the coffee table/anywhere other than behind the wheel, but which make the client just that tiny bit slower and more difficult to use than before whilst driving, not to mention the collection of annoyances from previous versions no-one at Waze seems to have any interest in fixing, i'm beginning to wonder just how much time any of the developers spend using the client in real world situations. Because whilst previous versions were at least useable most of the time, 3.5 manages to be an exercise in frustration with pretty much every single drive.

Also it looks like setting Min speed Knots from "3" to "-1", disables popups.
I think This can easily be made as a switch in GUI, right?

For those who wonder where the preferences file is, it's on internal SD card (my case)
/waze/preferences and can be edited either with some File manager or when accessing files via PC.

Code: Select all

Popups.Min speed Knots: -1

Another thing is why can't it be made turned off like it is for Group pop-ups? But instead you have to disable traffic information at all.
This is just one of dozens of threads about the same issue. The direct link has been posted before, many times. And I tire of posting it repeatedly, especially that day.

Why can't you disable it like group popups? Because that setting is not available to us. Pretty simple. Yes, you have to turn of visual traffic data, but the routing servers still can reroute you due to traffic jams/accidents. You just don't get the alerts.

Then I believe, this is Waze's "feature" for Android (maybe applications can't read battery status on iOs). There are these settings in preferences files..

Code: Select all

Battery.Threshold 1: 30
Battery.Threshold 2: 10
Battery.CheckPeriod: 30000
... and that's exactly when pop-up shows up... in addition the first time popup shows up it counts seconds to automatically "close popup", when second threshold is met, the default action is "close Waze".

Is this a "feature" of Android? Because on iOS we only have the OS-based notification and that has nothing to with Waze.

Okey, I can understand, why jasonh didn't give a direct link to #15, he's on iphone, but AlanOfTheBerg?

Maybe you can add another answer to that question like "To turn off these popups, you need to turn off the "WAZE""

And maybe I'm just another who is totally pissed of by pop-ups, but I completely agree to dsaunder, that when I'm driving "I want to see where I am, where I'm going and what's directly ahead".. or maybe "I can turn earlier, but.. I don't see what's the street name"

A red and orange colored nearby streets on the screen while driving gives enough information about traffic on them, I don't need a pop-up for that.

Although battery checker needs an option to be disabled. I'm clearly see my battery meter all the time while Waze is running, I don't need a notification pop-up about 30%...

The one at http://www.Waze.com/wiki

Scroll down a bit and you'll see a link to it.

Once you get into the FAQ, look at item #15.

Via my iPhone 3GS.

In the General Settings, you can reduce the 'Event Radius' to 5 miles. This should reduce the number of popups you see.

Making this radius even smaller has been requested many times by users, but 5 miles (or 5 km) is the lowest available distance at the moment.

I originally thought this is the setting I've been looking for...but nope, it has no effect.
