Issue 1) Fixed

Issue 2) I'm leaving for someone else to weigh in on this. Speed doesn't decide road type, it is more on carrying capacity. Some states make ALL US routes Majors. I think the most important thing is consistency. If you go from Major, to Minor, to Primary, back to Major and even a Freeway segment, it will mess with routing. I had fixed a route that bounced back and forth and someone complained that Waze didn't pick their route they wanted. Made the route consistent and routing worked.

Issue 3) Same as above.

Fixed the one in the second post.

Right, I had to go back myself and reread this too. But I think Primary is too low, Minor highway should be it's lowest rank.

I alerted the1who on this thread, so let's wait for our Region Coordinator to weigh in.

Rochester MN Unlock Requests

Postby DallasGrant » Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:05 pm

I am a level 3 Wazer, but have notices many errors in this city that needs to be resolved to either fix with correct information, or unlock at least to level 3 so I can fix the issue.

Issue 1) https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-92.37 ... s=62645684
This ramp is listed with unknown street name, but should be labeled like the opposite side "Exit 47: CR-36 / Marion Rd / CR-111"

Issue 2) https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-92.44 ... s=62618317
This section is showing wrong name and wrong road type. It should be labeled with "12th St SE" with the alt name of "US-14" and because it is in an area with traffic 40mph and lots of traffic lights, it should only be considered a primary street

Issue 3) This is just a few segments of this road in areas with lots of lights and traffic between 30-40 Mph and should be labeled as Primary Streets like all the roads that lead up to it instead of Major Hwys

This is all for now. Thank you for your assistance

I needed to add another
https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-92.35 ... s=66887291
This should be labeled as "to US-52 S" but it is unlabeled

I have found many instances where if you label a section of road that is a major highway going through a city where traffic is slower than what is considered highway speeds then it will not route a person to other roads that have the same speed limits but may be a faster route due to less traffic. I really noticed this in the city I actually live in, the route is a major route that has 3 major highways that go into one stretch ... it still normally uses that route for people that are traveling through the city, but then it appropriately guides traffic to other primary roads that would actually be a better route when not traveling through town.

In this particular city that I am editing here, even though is it a US highway, this section should not be the major route to carry people as it is incredibly congested with lots of lights and many faster routes using off streets (even if just traveling through the city because the other routes around this road have less lights and bypasses the downtown parts) ... Silver Lake Rd and 3rd Ave are routes that the people of the area would normally use because you will get to your location in much less time. Waze will route to these roads sometimes if it is bumper to bumper traffic in the downtown sections, but it often won't look at these roads (even though they are truck accessible routes) most other times unless Broadway is listed as a primary street.

I base most of my ideas on what should define a major highway through this http://www.waze.com/wiki/?title=Road_Types_(USA)#Major_Highway and from the description Pedestrian crossings may be limited really gives me the idea that a section considered a major highway should not be labeled in an area that goes through a downtown area of town with lots of stop lights and pedestrian traffic. I could be wrong here, but that is my feelings.

Sounds good ... if it should be minor highway in this case (after deliberation), I will fix this on any roads that I would have moved to primary street in the case of a US highway.

Thanks for the quick reply. I try to be within guidelines for the mapping and want the app to route correctly so let me know what needs to be corrected if I did something wrong.

Just real quick, I am reviewing the area.

If I didn't have to get to work right now, I'd get more in-depth here.

At the 2013 meetup this year, we discussed using functional classification maps as somewhat of a rule and guide to how we should classify our maps and road types. Here is what MN has for their classification: MNDOT

From there, after clicking agree, zoom into your location in question, under transportation selection on the left, there should be road details, under that is functional classification.

At the meetup, Andypoms and Jasonh300 shared their experiences with changing their states to match the DOT Functional Classification Maps. Some were outdated, and had to do the best with what we knew. But here is one version as somewhat of a guide to how the roads might look like if converted.

Principal Arterial - Interstate = Freeway
Principal Arterial - Freeway = Freeway
Principal Arterial - Other = Major Highway
Minor Arterial - Minor Highway
Major Collector = Primary Street
Minor Collector = Primary Street
Local = Street

Now, understandably, some functional maps might put a small section of Principal Arterial in between minor arterial streets. In that case, whichever is the more abundant type is preferred. The idea of switching back and forth I guess should be avoided. This isn't perfect either. Like a section of Country Club Rd in Rochester between US 63 and I think US 14, goes from Minor Arterial to Principal Arterial - Other and then back. Might as well just consider it minor arterial throughout that section. Granted, if you go from restricted access highways to limited access highways that extend for long periods, then go ahead and switch the type to match. But to go from one block to the next with one type or another I think should not be done. I hope this helps, that example is only one, here is another version.

Principal Arterial - Interstate = Freeway
Principal Arterial - Freeway = Major Highway
Principal Arterial - Other = Minor Highway
Minor Arterial = Minor Highway
Major Collector = Primary Street
Minor Collector = Primary Street
Local = Street

The last version according to their results is it matches the DOT guidelines closer, the other example I gave before had some issues with illogical road type changes, significant disconnect between major highways, and doesn't closely match DOT guidelines. So see, as I am saying, at this point, we can only use it as a guide, we'll have to use our best judgement.

Over the next few days, I'll get a closer link at those permalinks you provided and I'll take note of some issues and try to respond about any. Thanks!

I am in agreement. Right now, there will be issues for someone to cross through this town east to west (starting and ending outside of this area). With nothing above Primary Street, that is telling the routing engine there is no long distance route through there, look somewhere else.

Does MN have easily accessed functional classification maps? What do they say? I bet some of those roads remain as arterials.
