Chat tip: seeing other editors changes without permalinking

Post by AlanOfTheBerg
This may be obvious and known to many, but in case not:

When you are working together with another editor and want to see the changes they just made, you may think you need to permalink. But that makes all the chat history disappear, and chat doesn't connect right away, etc. It's a pain.

Instead, just go to a nearby non-critical segment, and change a turn restriction twice. That is, take an allowed turn and restrict it, then allow it again. Save. The browser will load the segments from the server again without having to permalink.

(I am sure that scripters will soon have a "road layer refresh" function to perform this same action.)

This can work, but isn't guaranteed because it depends on whether the objects selectable at that zoom levels are already cached in the browser.

True, but most of the time it is a user of high rank helping a local editor with a local edit, so both will have rights to make this kind of change.

I think global champs should set up and use some kind of screen sharing (free!?) and offer to show, visually, real-time. (I think that kind of functionality is beyond what should be in WME.)

Also, the road refresh functionality is built into Toolbox now, and also can be set up as a bookmarklet.

Not off the top of my head. If they read the Chat, they do. :)

Most L1 editors don't know about keyboard shortcuts or what a junction is, so... :o

Someone go download Screenhero and let's get online.

Skype is also a fairly well-used and widely available app.

If someone is available now, let's test!

TeamViewer also may be a good option.

I tested TeamViewer tonight with ggrane and it worked quite well. Has both integrated text and but more importantly, VoIP. It is free for personal use.

He was able to see the screen refresh about as fast as I was doing things. When he clicked, it put an arrow on my screen, for pointing things out. I was also able to give remote control to him. This can be taken away very quickly. Voice quality was very good, and he said image quality was great, too.

I think we may have a winner.

@sketch: certainly. What's a good time for you? Probably not before 9am, because I don't plan on getting up before 6.

Will want to test voice chat, so library not the best for you? Right now anytime is fine for me. Working from home all day.
