IMO, all the blue needs to blink red, not just the lines. The lines changing color isn't enough to trigger my attention. :)

Challange Accepted ;)
Userstyle.org provide some nice tool for configuring style before installation, so now user can chose between this small flashing indicator from screenshot above and flashing speech baloon. Diffrent for visible and invisible mode.
A whole button is now on TODO list because it need a little more work.

Im my experience, this works sometimes, but not always. Haven't found out what it depends on.

If you highlight a url that hasn't wrapped to stay in the chat window, the whole left side of the text moves off to the left, and the only way I've managed to get it back is to refresh the page, losing the chat messages.

There is no easy way to scroll. Can only use the slider/ arrows. The new message line covers the down arrow, so you end up going to the new message, then have to scroll back up to where you were reading.
