Strange Routing - Overland Park - Canterbury Preparatory

Post by mcj2a
There's a bunch update requests that seem to be from the same user at https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-94.65 ... 01&env=usa, and I'm not sure what the problem is. The user is trying to get to Canterbury Preparatory School at 6820 W 121st St, but the app always tries to route you there on Glenwood St., which is not connected: https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-94.66 ... s=18746158. I tested the routing in google maps, and it seems to work correctly there.

I thought maybe moving the street address entrance point onto the main part of 121st rather than that offshoot might help, but the street address was forced and thus I can't change it. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix that, I'd be interested to hear. :)

I made some changes around Canterbury Prep there in Overland Park. The issue stems from Waze always seeking the road segment nearest the marker. So if you search for Canterbury Prep using Google for example as a search provider the marker for the building happened to be closer to Glenwood St. So Waze tries to get you close as it can to that marker despite the fact the address has nothing to do with Glenwood St.

So the solution... parking lot roads (at least in this case). I've added in some for the two buildings on that circle. Nothing fancy, just basic parking lot roads. Come tomorrow morning if map tile releases are on schedule, the routing based on their current favorite or the Google search in Waze to get to the school should take them as they'd expect. Since you've already been looking into these, feel free to notify the person reporting the problem to give things a shot on Saturday morning or early next week to see if it looks like the routing issue was resolved.

Note, in some cases, the issue stems from Google data not having a correct marker pin. A lot of times I'll find that a house address or business listing has a rough (approximate) placement in Google Maps. If you go into Google Map Maker http://www.google.com/mapmaker you can revised the marker location (make sure you justify it in the comments of why you're updating... and don't be surprised to be rejected at any point as their approval process leaves MUCH to be desired). Fixing up those types of problems though are very useful as simply moving the marker there in Google Maps and then telling an issue reporter to re-search for their destination after the change goes live has helped tremendously. The only problem with that is you'll also have to communicate that if they'd save a destination as a favorite and you'd revised the location in Google, they'd need to delete the old favorite and re-save it new to their favorites list (since those don't update dynamically).

Let me know if you had any other questions!

Awesome, I didn't know that about the nearest street. Thank you!
