Collecting mega points, where am I going wrong??

Post by
While not necessarily a UK specific question, it's perhaps easier to relate to the UK geographically speaking...

I've been looking at the weekly scoreboards, and it's always with a sense of dismay that whilst I drive with waze on all the time, and my score trundles ever upwards, I only ever achieve a fraction of what the weekly UK top points scorers achieve (and an even smaller percentage of the worldwide top score).

I've been using waze for about 9 months, driving about 300 miles/week, and a couple of weeks ago gained L2 editing status, thinking that most of the roads round Northern Ireland were complete, i only really edited the map when I was aware of an issue, or responding to a UR. As there don't seem to be too many wazers in NI, we don't see too many URs to fix. Since gaining my L2 status, I downloaded the WME tool, which has thrown up multiple issues which I've been striving to fix - lots of splitting segments to fix "Same endpoints drivable segments (slow)" errors, and renaming lots of Belfast streets so the city name contains the ward and the "(Belfast)" city name. as highlighted by WME. I've also been in a few new (to me) parts of the country, and have noticed missing roads, so have been adding these where I can. In the past couple of weeks, my edit count has jumped from 1000 to 5400 (and more to come today) - I've seen my point count jump by about 8000, which would be consistent with the number of edits and driving I've done, but I'm flabbergasted to see users scoring 50K + weekly within the UK, or international users getting 200K+ weekly (argus-cronos getting 859K in a week is just unbelieveable :() so where am I going wrong. I've had a chance to do some mass editing this past couple of weeks, but how do others get the time to make so many changes?? I'm only 1500 points away from the 1% club, which will be my goal (plus perhaps jumping to L3), but everything else just looks unobtainable - any ideas how to light the blue touch paper??

Take your phone on holiday for a few days.....

I recently had a couple of days work in Sicily and used Waze to drive 100 miles from the airport to site and back. Now I've got another area to edit for a few months and boy do they need some help

As an example in just one small town nearly every road needs some tweaking, mostly simple stuff and everything is covered by StreetView. Just don't try to sort out all the auto generated MP's; it seems the local drivers have no respect for any turn restrictions or one way roads........

Well that's what I have been doing, I didn't think there was anything wrong in that, not seen anything in the Wiki.

I understand your point but I think their maps are so far from being complete that there shouldn't be a problem, my name is all over the edits, if I was doing much wrong I would expect a PM from someone in Sicily.

It really looks like they could do with all the help they can get and I really don't think it's much difference to me making edits in Cornwall when I've been there for a day and found problems.

One thing that seems to be missing from this posting is mention of cheating.

Trying to explain the unexplainable without mentioning cheating does not give the complete picture.

Simply put, it's going on wholesale amongst the more technically adept editors. It's not simply feasible to be able to rake up the numbers appearing.

I see thousands of updates not changing a thing in segments, many still unnamed and actually making others worse for the Waze user, as if the edits are being conducted via a script!!!

Cheating is going on wholesale assisted by an Ostrich mentality.

Waze has had to agree with me on this after I pointed out the actions of some nefarious scripts that appeared. In fairness to Waze they took immediate action!

In the long run, who can trust a program that might have even the slightest intent of slightness in any part of its core being?

I say its time to take stiffer action against cheaters and give honest editors a chance. In the long run it's Waze and the end user that will benefit.

Community plugins, extensions and tools strongly tend to deter many new local prospective editors - the type Waze really needs to make it a truly effective interactive community social navigation asset.

Many new editors give up prematurely because they become overwhelmed by tech-talk and feel it is totally above them! Many have said to me that Waze is only for very technically savvy experts involved in the computer programming industry. It's a pity but, that's the unfortunate reality I've come across in trying to coax new editors to stay.

Even some responses to UR's are too technical and not understandable by users, never mind editors.

Simplicity, sense of achieving something, helping others for the common good out there on the road are some of the best motivators and an important cornerstone for the positive progress of Waze.

Absolutely 'dknight212' - "quality of edits not the quantity".

While authors of plugins, extensions and tools must be highly complimented for excellence, in the wrong hands they can be lethal!

The psychological aspects employed to encourage everyone have been well thought out and the awarding of points will probably continue as one key factor.

Ditto Pip, David, 100%!

Additionally, the utilisation of Validator logically conjures a lateral thinking logical conjecture that errors/problems discovered will be corrected!
Otherwise why use Validator?
It's not what we see out there!

Ahhh yes... That old bugbear... I was going to mention it but you have beaten me to it.. :)

I don't try to fix things that aren't obviously broken.
Where I do try and fix things, I usually take the time to try getting it right (in my mind certainly).
If I spend a few hours at it, I can rack up a few hundred edits, maybe 500 or so...
If I edited solidly for 8-10 hours and 7 days a week, not only would I be going out of my mind but I suspect I would still fail to hit the top 10 weekly editors.

With the bar for "Country Editor" now moved to 500k edits I see it as an added incentive for people to "push the boundary" for what is acceptable editing. It would be much easier to draw a final line under places for "Country Editor" so that they are only appointed by their Country Admins which would remove the incentive for this. But their choice does need to be made carefully.

In over 3 years of editing I have still to get the top weekly editor candy! And I only came close to that one once! (probably because everyone was away! LoL)

Des. . . ;)

If you want help in raking up points legitimately, the Validator script will find a lot of map defects, which you can then manually fix and get points for.

Or at least, it will in an area which originated from a taken-on base-map, I haven't tried it in an area with no original base-map.

A few caveats on Validator:

- not everything it reports is an error that needs fixing

- some of the things it reports are quicker and easier to fix than others. It would be possible to rack up points faster by just cherry-picking the easy ones. I don't know whether there's an official view on this, but I would regard it as cheating. If you're going to "validate" an area, either fix all the problems, or just the most important, but not just the easiest.

- it doesn't help at all with the most important check - does the map correspond with the real road?

In an ideal world, scripts wouldn't be necessary as WME would do the job itself.

And half the "technical" things we fix, like dead-ends with improper or missing nodes at the end, would be impossible to create if WME did it's job properly.

And personally I'd like to see points scrapped, the motivation should be getting the map right for the community, not soaring up some arbitrary and dare I say pointless table.
