Northwood Blvd - Royal Oak - Split, should be Single?

Post by Galimaufry
Northwood Blvd terminus @ Woodward

Came across this road as a result of a UR about a cut-through. Looks like it was drawn-in as a split road but can't see why. It was done originally by a Level 1, so there's that, later edited here and there by higher level folks. Does anyone know anything (or see anything) about this road that has kept it split? If not, I'll go ahead and sew it together (and accept any tips other than those on the split/unsplit wiki page.)

Thanks all.

Based on the Create Dates, it looks like it just came split from the base map. No one probably got around to tackle it, or they considered it too complex because of some potential issues. If you unsplit it, just pay close attention to how your connectivity works at intersections like Oliver/Bonnie View, Glenview, and Sycamore.

Yes, the Create Date for base map segments seems to be January 18, 2009 -- at least around here. Don't trust the user associated with it though. Some will say "admin(staff)" while others will be attributed to users that joined well after 2009. Perhaps these were the first updaters?

Looking at the Create Date for Northwood, I would say it came split, and no one ever unsplit it.

Whether from a driver or from Cartouche, it's interesting from a database perspective that a "created by" field would be modified to reflect the first user to update the segment rather than maintain the creator. It's not the quirkiest thing I've seen with Waze though, and it's good history even if your dad doesn't have a secret life as a map editor that you're not aware of!

As a consolation prize, wou could still suppress the enabled u-turns as well as change angles where appropriate for "turn" instead of "stay to the" instructions. That five direction split at Oliver Ave is likely to give some unexpected instructions too.

The Woodward segments have been unlocked.

I don't believe Validator will highlight the enabled u-turns, but Junction Node Fixer will.

Ah, so 2009 is the base map milestone? I'll make a note of that.

I'll look more at these before starting. If I decide to undertake this, I'll start with all the parts that are straightforward, and then focus on the trouble spots like this where routing around a real-world median would need to be worked out. One of those splits might have to stay (the Glenview/Bonnie View/Oliver island), but it appears the majority of it should be unsplittable, just need a (perhaps overly) ambitious Junior Editor to take a stab at it. ;)

I've been shunted down this road a few times recently as a path to Woodward from Crooks, and each time I've been like "yes, but this is not really split-road worthy...?"

Even if I end up passing on this for now, this has given me a good bit to think about.

Update, looks like KelleyCook did this. I was waiting for an unbroken stretch of time so I could tackle it, but I guess I was too slow. :( I'll call something next time so there's no ambiguity.

I'm actually running through things with WME Validator right now (which is why I noticed it had been done.) I reviewed the prep notes I'd made, but I'll check that junction one one more time (I spent some time thinking that one out in particular...)

Oh, also I was going to ask a 3(+) to unlock the relevant segments of Woodward so I could redo the junction (seems too complicated now with the split gone.)

It may not be as odd as you think. If the base map import never actually assigned a user name (not even "staff") to the created by value, then later decisions for the database like: "make sure created by has a value if null, then the only username waze would have to satisfy this is the username that munched the dots for the segment.
