For the time being, there's plenty to do now we can set the navigation points of migrated place:areas :up

So, parking.

AIUI, UK guidance has, upto now, used the logic that if you're using waze you're assumed to be in a car and therefore the destination waze should take you to (and therefore sometimes the only needed landmark for a place) is the carpark. Entirely logical to me.

The generic (but US biased) wiki page for Places:ParkingLot uses very strong language against this for some very common UK scenarios - most notably supermarkets/shopping centres/stadiums

If you ignore the Places spin on it:
It just boils down to a difference in how we/they treat parking. So, do we use this opportunity to change how we treat parking, or else it's an easy decision to just delete that bit and replace with the current UK guidance.

not ignoring the Places spin, but keeping UK parking guidance
With Places you can add many sub-categories to a Place:area, including "Parking Lot"

suggestion: enlarge existing shopping/stadia building landmarks to encompass the adjacent parking, add a "Parking Lot" sub-class, move the Place:area destination marker to the entrance/parking lot road nearest the entrance. Delete the migrated/existing parking lot landmark. Or, vice-versa. Leave the existing ParkingLot Area, but add a sub-class for shopping center (sic) etc and expand it to cover the buildings.

Once search is working we'll know how being a secondary category effects a search for car-park. It could turn out to be OK for distinguishing public v. customer parking.

It was something Orit mentioned to me in the Pub on Friday. The vast majority of UK editors aren't using the UK English localised editor pages.

Do we know if there are any other differences (apart from Category names)?
There's the small matter of road types, too:

Freeway = Motorway
Walking Trail = Footpath
Railroad = Railway
Runway/Taxiway = Runway

If most of us aren't using it, though, perhaps best we standardize on the default for now to avoid confusion until some kind of country default can be enabled.

Firstly I'm struggling with the whole concept of 'mapping' individual premises.

Why do we need to start mapping shops/pubs/offices etc when we have Google and Foursquare for that?.. and hopefully more partners to come.
I agree with the other comments that it's too much work and personally, adding and updating shop names does not interest me in the slightest, never mind all the URs that this could generate.

I just can't see that we have the resources to keep that level of information accurate and up-to-date - and bad data is often worse than no data!

In any case, I actually think it's nigh on impossible to navigate to premises to that level of detail.
For instance, when going to a shop/restaurant, where do you want to be taken?
  • The front door
  • The nearest car park
  • A cheaper car park slightly further away
  • The nearest free car park
  • The delivery bay round the back
It could be any of the above based on the circumstances of that visit - so you are
  • dropping someone off
  • popping in for 5 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • the whole day
  • making a delivery.

One significant thing I did note was the guidance relating to Parking-Lot area place:
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Places/Parki ... Principles
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Places/Parki ... ic_parking
If we adobt this then that means most of the Parking Lot areas in the UK should be removed as they are specific car parks dedicated to customers/staff/residents/students of that premises and do not meet these principles.

A good thing I feel - and it would mean that a 'go to nearest parking' feature in the client would actually be useful rather than taking me to the private car park of the office block next door where I'm likely to be clamped.

PS Spotted a typo in the hyperlink on the Landmark page...
Until specific guidance for the UK implementation of places is issued users are encouraged to read the Generic 'Paces' pages
Can someone correct?
.. or are we all being put through our paces
