London Aerials

Post by
looks like some of south east london has got some new aerials but google forgot to stitch them in the right place.

Now the OCD in me is going crazy. Aerial shifter is helping, but thought I would mention before someone comes along and edits all the roads to move them back in line.

[EDIT] - for the reference of editors directed to this topic.
You will need the WME Aerial Shifter script and use a vertical offset of -10 if editing in London.

This script will shift the aerials automatically whenever you're in "London".

Reason: Add link to WME Aerial Auto Shifter to first post

It looks like the London aerials may have been fixed at last, I have checked various places mainly north, west and central London and they now much better aligned so be careful if you are using Aerial Auto Shifter.

It also looks like they have updated some of the aerials, if you compare this image to the one iainhouse uploaded you will see that that the buses are different and that Googles "road" now runs down the centre of the bridge.

Googles editors are going to have to come back and correct their roads now...

I noticed it around 7:30 this morning, found this thread, saw your picture of Westminster Bridge so thought just to double check I would find the same image, I normally use Chrome so think that is where I captured it.

Just tried in Chrome and Explorer 10 and got the old and new images so I don't know what is going on :?

Is one of them using an old cache thingy .. it's all a bit too technical for me

Hi,

There was, if I remember, somewhere you could report misaligned aerial imagery, whether misaligned to neighbouring images or whether in the wrong position.
Need that in the wiki as I can't see it there either.

Hi,

Normal to whom? Challenger Tank drivers? Add the possible inaccuracy of GPS to 20 meters (or more) and your start accuracy is 30 meters. Not so good when looking for/navigation to a premises or house.

Can we formally ask Waze for the re-instatement of the more reliable Bing aerials? They won't be (allowed to) agree of course, but it would make the point.

It's a hell of a lot of London!

HQ have just posted about working to fix misaligned aerials here.

I have just reported this area, which basically as much of London as I can fit on my screen in one permalink. Aerials are offset 10m to the south across this entire area and probably further.

Thanks to Google Earth and the historical imagery controls, I have managed to identify the extent of the misaligned Google aerials for London. This is not a pretty sight.

I'm guessing that there is a larger set of aerial images, from which Google has purchased everything within the London "county" borders (that's the pale green line you can see in the image). According to the history tool, these images were taken in July 2013.

Obviously this was done to provide more up-to-date and better images for London. Unfortunately they've really shot themselves in the foot. These images are misaligned for Google Earth and Google Maps - we're just collateral damage.
