I don't think the reason for your broken colors is the replacing of the scheme file.
I do that all the time that I change scheme files while waze is running and it works without problems. The scheme files are loaded when waze is started and you can delete or change the files after that.

What you experienced sounds more like the black and white map bug. A ##@resetapp or a clean install are the only things that help there.

I am on Android 6 now.
Copying the schema file into the waze directory is no problem, as I have root. Before that I have shut down waze and stopped the service as well (although that was not necessary on android 4.4).
But then the map is only white areas with black streets.
I suppose that some cache (dalvik or cache partition) has to be cleared as well.

Has somebody solved that problem already?

No, I am using a v4.x color scheme (my scheme, created for v.4).

Last change was in May when I added the railroads when they became available in the client.
It was working in the same version of Waze before I switched to Android 6

I am on 4.4.2 and didn't have any problems lately (always with the latest Waze beta).

You have to close and restart Waze or even change the color scheme so the changed files are read.
At least on Android (what are you using?) everything still works without any problems.

You need to copy the .lua files into the directory, they are used to generate the color scheme.

You can copy skin_values.day.lua to skin_values.low_contrasts.lua to have the same colors in the alternative routes screen and other mini maps, e.g. search results, search result detail view etc. Unfortunately there is no separate variant for night mode, but personally I don't mind the bright colors in the mini maps.
