Could we please have the highlighting of dead-end u-turns turned back on for the UK, please?

As discussed elsewhere on the forums, we still consider them a real problem. We had Waze mass-disable every u-turn on the UK map. Unfortunately, the routing engine keeps enabling new ones where the disabled u-turn is "soft". With the arrows already removed, it will be difficult to diagnose problems involving u-turns unless we can see them, not to mention the routing problems we still see them causing.

I guess you can still use a custom check for that (i.e. match deadEndA&UturnA or deadEndB&UturnB).

Let me know if you still would like to get those checks back for UK.
Yes please. I wouldn't ask, except I know you already have the infrastructure for making checks country-specific.

Also, I'm already using both custom checks and constantly resisting the temptation to ask you to add more.

This pretty much matches my experience, although I hadn't determined the exact circumstances - or connected it to Validator.

Hey there. I just wanted to say it's good to see you back here. :D

I hope that whatever was keeping you busy in "real life" has now calmed down somewhat.

I don't believe there is any particular "resistance" to a tab. The situation is really very simple:

An entirely unpaid Waze editor has decided to develop an incredibly useful tool for the entire community, but does not currently have much time to devote to it.

This is obvious, if nothing else, from the fact that fixes for this script following WME changes have been pretty slow in recent months. Berestovskyy stated somewhere earlier in this thread that he had previously looked at putting Validator in a tab and will do so again. If he doesn't want to, or doesn't have the time to look at it, then that is entirely his prerogative.

The request for being in a tab has been made and acknowledged. Please people - asking once or twice is just asking. Asking again and again is nagging and I, for one, would not respond well to that. My response would likely be "You don't like it? Stop using it and develop your own". But then I'm a grumpy old git. ;)

t0cableguy wrote:If validator didn't have a note specifically written in its code that says not to modify it i'd have already worked towards making a tab on my own time. I have other script writing individuals that are willing to help me with this. but with respect to the dev its HIS script. HE wrote in the script code to NOT MODIFY IT. well with this mentality i will happily stop asking and hammering my point across and just modify the code. Thanks.
The only point you're hammering across is that the unpaid developer of this script isn't working fast enough for your impatience and that you will therefore disrespect his wishes as to the modification of the code.

If the mentality you don't like is the developer's, then you don't like someone who gives you something for free that isn't up to your standards. If it's my mentality you don't like, well I couldn't care less. I have often stood up for the script developers and will continue to do so. There is little that angers me more than editors who feel they have some sort of right to complain about the generosity of a member of this community.

That might be partially aimed at me - and if anyone feels I've done so, I apologise.

If it's aimed at comments directed at me - well I can take it and I don't mind. ;) "Holier-than-thou" is a great description, given that my nickname is Rabbi and practically everyone I've know or worked with for the last 30 years has called me that.

The holiday season (well your holiday season) is here now, so you all have a good one.

impulse200 wrote:I wonder why not to integrate Validator and Toolbox features strait into the WME? Those two are already must have for any editor out there.
There are a couple of reasons.

The most important reason, by far, is simply that nobody at Waze HQ is a heavy or regular editor. This is readily apparent from all the obstacles and broken workflows they have thrown at us over the years; from the fact that the WME UI is plainly designed for use on large, high resolution screens.

As a result, they have little or no idea of what tools will actually be helpful to us. Validator and Toolbox (and other scripts) are provided by people who actually edit the map. They know what they would find useful, then go and develop it.

I'll give you a prime example: editor notes on the map. I proposed having a special type of UR here back in 2014, and that wasn't the first proposal along those lines. Waze never responded. Instead, we started adding URs with [TAGS] in the text. URO+ added the ability to provide custom icons for tagged URs. 2½ years later this system is used across the world. This summer, at various meetups, Waze have finally admitted that some sort of editor note system is needed and is under development.

And that brings me to the other reason why these scripts aren't part of WME: responsiveness. It's taken literally years to get an Editor Note facility added to WME - and it's not here yet. But if you want a new ability for WME from a script you can just ask. If someone who can write a script thinks it's a good idea, there could be a new script within days, or a new feature added to an existing script. Waze HQ will never match the level of response provided by the script writers.

Right now, we're going through the regular painful period after a WME update. I know that Toolbox and URO+ have already been updated, as I'm sure some other scripts have. Within a week or so, most scripts will have been fixed. Yes, a Validator update is likely to be slow because the author doesn't have much time for Waze nowadays. But here, "slow" might mean a few weeks. Compared to Waze HQ, where slow might mean a few years!

There is no way I would like to hand over control of what I consider critical parts of the editing experience to Waze HQ. I'd rather it stayed in the hands of people like us - who actually edit and care about our experience and the experience of other editors..

There has been an update to WME today. No clue what's changed - what hasn't changed is no announcement. :x

Having said that, Validator continues to work for me with the recent fix installed. I'm not seeing any problems with the other scripts that I run.
