Question on Pronunciation of "Malcolm X Blvd"

Post by cpong86
I came across an update request saying that the "voice should say Malcolm X not Malcolm the tenth."

Is there anything that can be done? Or do we just have to live with the wrong pronunciation?

You must not be in the US because we've tested this before and X comes out as "ex" in TTS. I've heard there is a country-specific abbreviation list and that some countries are specifically set up to have X say "tenth."

Now, if you are in the US then your experience doesn't match previous testing which according to the document, was conducted earlier last year. See the linked Google Doc in the Test of Text-to-Speech (TTS) Abbreviations in Waze Clients thread.

Does putting X inside single quotes have no effect? 'X'

EDIT: I just did a TTS test and "turn right to Malcolm 'X' Blvd" is pronounced thusly: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/143 ... 27x%27.mp3

It is not something Waze wants to made generally available, no, sorry. It may be a feature of the map editor in the future.

See viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15178

There should be a way on the list to format it so the X is pronounced "ex"

Yeah, it's in Boston, MA. I haven't heard the pronunciation myself, but it was reported by another user.

I haven't had time yet to look through the other thread, but I will soon to see if there's a fix in there!

This is an ongoing issue here in Boston!

This sort of UR pops up pretty frequently: "The correct street name is Malcolm X Boulevard Malcolm the 10th Boulevard."

because X gets pronounced "the Tenth".

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Hopefully the Reporter will let me know if it's fixed, or in a few days I can try driving in that area.

BTW is the TTS test something that we (mere mortals) can do as well?

And got a confirmation from the most recent reporter that it's now pronounced correctly!
