Because every single update that each individual does, adds up to the total completion and quality of the maps in your community.
For some it's a global competition, for others it's not. It should not distract from their sense of achievement to know that they created a set of roads that everyone travels on and make use of every day.
It also does not mean that their contribution is valued any less than that of the high flyers.
