Waze's worst design flaw is compounded by the new Editor

Post by
Since last April, I have happily commuted one of our national primary routes west and east each weekend. This weekend it didn't work. When I investigated today I discovered that a well meaning editor had tried to more accurately reflect the positions of offramps and the geometry of roundabouts. For example, he moved an offramp back 30m (presumably so that it would tell you to turn sooner). However, instead of picking up the junction, he moved the road segments and then reconnected them - but never enabled the connections. The road now cant route past that junction. At least in Cartouche, the junction came with you.

(BTW the worst design flaw is defaulting junctions to prevent turns)

I really don't have the enthusiasm and energy to go back and redo last April's work and I really don't want to lock every road I edit.

If we allow the untrained to edit the map, then the defaults should facilitate movement on the map rather than hinder it.

Could a moderator who has the privileges add a poll to this post with seven possible answers:
1. I live in the US and I favor blocked junctions
2. I live in the US and I favor enabled junctions
3. I live in a base mapped country and I favour blocked junctions
4. I live in a base mapped country and I favour enabled junctions
5. I live in a mapped from scratch country and I favour blocked junctions
6. I live in a mapped from scratch country and I favour enabled junctions
7. I want to disable untrained editors.

If there's any nice Waze person listening, could you/would you please enable all turns on every junction in Ireland. It will be far less work to add back in the real restrictions.

I'm now off to play Spades instead of editing the map.

The wiki is that location.

Perhaps so, but the keyboard shortcuts are not specific to any country but are global. Limiting yourself to the Ireland forum is likely the cause of that.

True enough, but when some editors (myself included in the past!) just go through and select streets and enable 2-way, save and leave, you are left with saved/edited turn restrictions which can cause routing problems.

The next release of the map editor will have this fixed. Well, mostly. ATM, the issue with a 1-way receiving reverse connectivity when split by a new segment/junction still happens. But I imagine that should be fixed prior to release, too.

I think that it's clear:
  1. Waze isn't going to blanket change all junctions to wide open (green) country-wide for any country
  2. Most editors do want a change to the default behavior in the editor such that a newly drawn road defaults to 2-way
  3. When a new junction is created with the newly drawn 2-way road, then all possible allowed turns are allowed by default
  4. We've asked for #2 and #3 before and it hasn't happened yet, but they definitely know that most of us favor them.

I don't agree. 90% of all new junctions should have the turns enabled automatically based on road directionality. This and defaulting new roads to 2-way has been posted about and "voted" on by the community multiple times. It was nearly unanimous.

(Another feature often requested which goes along with this: if a road is changed from 1-way to 2-way or vice versa, the junctions at either end should adjust accordingly. Not sure I agree with this.)

On this specifically, an AM can edit any locked map elements within their defined area.

Hi,
This person called - llayden, he is becoming annoyance for lot of drawers. (Please refer to forums)
He has no clue about our area. By locking his drawings, not me or other AM can fix it or change it afterward.
Its becoming a big issue in our area. A lot of mistakes will be reported, where we could have none. If the main road is locked, I cant add and edit any turn or estate which connects with such road. Wrong turns, one way streets, etc.

I want to help you to upgrade the map in my area and advertise Waze between the drivers, because I am one of them and I know my area very, very well!!! But at the same time the app-map is becoming incomplete and useless.

I hope you will look into it and sort it out asap.

Thank You for listening and good luck.
I have lost my interest to spend my time searching for non-locked roads.

Regards,
Yanis

I'm the
well meaning editor
mentioned in post by llayden on Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:06 pm

From my recent limited Waze experience I feel the editor is relatively well geared up for inputting greater detail on the map, which would give a solid foundation and pay dividends to users in the long run. I think there is a matter of aesthetics too - final product needs to look good and contain as much pertinent information for the traveler as possible. Its a great end product that we need to aim for.

Some elements are tediously repetitive alright! Editing the map can be a bit mundane but then so is SEO. Its something requiring great patience that you might need to be cut out for. Do we need to keep our eyes more on the point and not the points!

It is a matter for new editors like me to become proficient. Its only by our mistakes and personally rectifying them that we learn and become proficient.

I would like to see all of the short-cuts and more as elaborated by Prescia in one place for easy reference:-
Press "r" twice to make it two way
select junction
press "w" to enable all turns
select other junction
press "w" to enable all turns again
"ctrl+s" to save,
sometimes the map get errors for no reason and i have to back track all my edits if I don't save.
like "no nodes connected" or the descriptive " an error occurred"

I would love a preferences option in the editor
So I could set it to default to junctions allow all turns and roads two way.

After I finish and area I often zoom out
and hit "Shift+a" to show all red arrows, which I then clear if I am sure there isn't a reason for it to be red.
Hopefully we will soon get greater satellite imagery on the Ireland map.

Best regards.

Thank you AlanbfTheBerg and wl02703 - information on Keyboard Shortcuts much appreciated! Looks a Bit silly of me not finding "Keybord Shortcuts" myself ...

I'm not only new to Waze but also navigating and using a forum environment.

Thank you AlanOfTheBerg I understand now!

I'm happy and have bookmarked the links given. I expect with continued use to become familiar with all keyboard shortcuts.
