I fully support this effort as it is too easy for closures without firm end dates to expire and go unnoticed while the road is still closed. I'm not a big fan of sheets but if we could leverage what is already in place for NYC with minimal effort then that should hold us over until other tools are available.

whoaitspete wrote:There is also a US sheet broken down by regions. This post has more information about it, as well as the submission sheet. However, I'm not sure how often it's patrolled, so it would be good to mention to an SM that you've made a submission. It used to be quite active.
while the submission sheet will remain, FYI the offical waze sheet it was based off is being sunsetted since we now have the tools to do the closures and MTEs in WME. If we want to have a state sheet I see no reason not to. I think we should have these sheets (including the UR closure sheet) listed in the wiki for all NY and visiiting editors to know where to find it.

I for one thinks its a great idea and should not be too complex. It should have a column for when it needs to be revisited, and for sources of information which can be used to follow up with when revisiting later. I can work with rfrsw101 once its up to build in a reminder scrit that will allow you to signup for reminders before your closures expire.

I think this is great, and I like the proposal by rfrsw101 to simplify the data. I will work with him directly to optimize a bit. I think it's good to add seasonal closures, and recurring events. I think we can add a column for marking closures an editor wished to follow. Editors will then be able to sign up for reminders on all closures, only closures they are following, or only closures they added to the sheet.

So I wrote a script to automate daily reminders from the NYS portion of the sheet. There are wo types of reminders available (email, and calendar events), and three flavors of alert level (all closures, only those you reported or are following, or only those you reported).

The program will check daily for closures starting or ending in exactly 7 days and send them in the alert if there are any.
The idea of alerting before the opening date, is to give you an opportunity to extend if needed (because we all know how accurate timetables are for construction), and/or deal with any related URs for the closure.
For closures less than a week long, it will only alert for the closing date, not the opening date.

There are instructions included in the sheet by clicking the "Instructions" button in the Reminders menu.
To setup auto reminders go to the 'Reminders' menu, and choose the region you want reminders for.
The program will run daily at the same hour you initially set it up, and alert you to any closures starting, or ending in 7 days time based on your preferences.
For closures less than a week long, there will only be 1 alert for the closing date, there will not be an alert for the opening date.
The are three options for which closures to be alerted to:
1) ALL closures in the sheet which are in the timeframe.
2) Any closures you have added, or are FOLLOWING which are in the timeframe.
3) Only closures you have ADDED which are in the timeframe.
You can follow closures by adding your username to the 'FOLLOWING' column of any closure, if there are multiple editors separate the names with commas (,).

In the sub menu for that region click on 'Subscribe to Auto Reminders'.
Once you do this, you will be prompted to give the script permission to run. The script needs to see your email address to associate your account to your username, and use your email to send you the reminders. (The reminder emails will be sent to you from your own email account)
It is therefore important to ensure that you are logged into the sheet with the account you want the reminder emails to be sent from/to.
You will then be asked a series of questions to determine your alert preference, once you click 'YES' that becomes your choice, and you won't be asked about the other options.
Finally you will be offered the opportunity to have the reminders added to one of your Google Calendars as an event with a popup reminder (this is useful if you want to receive push notifications on your devices).
If you do not want to use this feature simply press 'CANCEL', and the program will proceed.
To use the calendar feature you must enter the exact name of the calendar you want the alerts to be placed in.
You must own this calendar.
Calendar events will be set an hour after the program runs each day, to give the events a chance to sync to all your devices before the alert time.
The program will require permission to manage your calendars for this to work.
If you enter a name which does not match one of the calendars you own, a list of all your owned calendars will be displayed, and then the program will stop running.
You will need to copy the name of the calendar you want to use, and repeat the setup steps again.
You can also create a new calendar to use exclusively for Waze reminders, and use that one.

To stop the daily reminders, got to the 'Reminders' menu, then select the region sub menu, then click on 'Cancel All Auto Reminders'.
To change your preferences, add, or remove a calendar, or change the time the reminders are sent;
Follow the instructions to stop the reminders, then setup the reminders again the way you want them.

Sounds good to me.

Seasonal closures sound like a good idea too. Many are rather obscure, yet they still need to be re-entered every fall.

Hi Ben,

Speaking on behalf of the NYC RTC Team, we currently utilize such a thing that does exactly as you described above. This is an interesting proposition that we could expand the NYC Sheet into the other counties.

Can also be viewed here if the rest of the screenshot is cut off.

Yea, ignore the bit I deleted lol. I don't recognize usernames too well sometimes, I know you by your full name in GHO xD. We can definitely break it down, perhaps a large sheet just for Upstate NY. We have one for NYC, and there is potential for one in Long Island.

Edit: I also had my notifications off, which is how I missed all of that. I did end up reading through it though.

We have a section titled Long-Term Closures (LTCs), these are ones that last for months, half a year, etc. a few days would just be a regular closure.

EDIT: The reason we have such a complicated sheet is that we enter closures from a website listing such as NYC DOT or 511NY. We dedicate quite a bit of time for these closures that affect traffic flow in the NYC Area.

 A more simplified version of the NYC Sheet for UpstateNY would most likely only include LTCs, as it would not be necessary to log the Short Term Closures.
