estimated time of arrival keeps increasing...

Postby ramblinwreck_81 » Mon Jul 04, 2016 11:59 pm

I made two trips over this holiday weekend, both just under 400 miles. Out of curiosity, I watched the estimated time of arrival increase by about 10 minutes as I drove and I drove at or above the speed limit almost all the time.

I'm not complaining about the waze app. Instead, it makes me wonder, how does waze calculate estimated time of arrival?

I had assumed it was based on distance divided by the speed limit but now I'm convinced this is not the case. Perhaps instead, it uses average speed data over segments, which I'm sure is greater than the speed I drove.

Anyway, looking for insights here.

Speed limits were only recently added, so they were never part of the algorithm for the ETA, and still aren't for now.

The Wiki has a lot of information about the routing server:

Since it was a holiday, it's probable that the road conditions were not the same as it usually is the rest of the year, which is a possible reason for a wrong ETA.

You can always report it to Waze so that they can investigate here:
